computer overheating?
my computer has recently started rebooting randomly. when it does i notice the cpu temp is 69degrees. it used to be around 45. Almost at the same time, one if the fans started making wierd whirly sounds. im not sure whitch fan it is. they all seem to be running good.
anybody have any ideas? will i need a new cpu fan? or a whole new cpu? |
You might try dusting your fans and such, just give'em a compressed air blowjob. Dust can block a lot of air flow, if that doesn't bring your temp down to 45 or there abouts buy a new fan.
You shouldn't need a new CPU if you catch it before it completely burns itself up. |
Find the problem fan. Unplug them until the funky noise stops.
Sounds like it's probably a cpu fan but make sure. (don't leave the cpu powered more than a few seconds without the fan running) Fans can be purchased from local electronics suppliers or ordered from endless internet sites. Expect $2-5 for a 40mm fan. Of course, measure yours before buying. |
ok, i took everything apart and cleaned it. it turns out it was the cpu fan. it no longe makes the whirling sound, but now at start up and at random times it sounds and looks like its strugling to speed up. any suggestions for a new fan? i have an athlon 2700. i think it soket A

I believe those came with a 60x60mm fan, 10 or maybe 20mm thick. Here's a more powerful replacement for $4.99:

that looks alot different than what i have. mine is conected directly to the heat sink. or are those things modular?

See the screws at each corner? You'll remove them, go to a hardware store, buy 4 screws that are the same diameter but 40-45mm long, and install the new fan. Might cost you another $1.
You could buy another 10mm fan but the price would be the about the same. The other fan is 2-4db quieter and should move more air. Don't touch the fan blades. |
You probably won't even have to get new screws if the new fan is the same thickness as the old one (the one you have is a pretty standard size)
