It's hard to tell you where you went wrong if you don't explain what you did.
Make sure your proxie list is recent and fresh, or that you have a paid proxy subscription (yes these do exist for commercial reasons, think china) Ping the proxy server on the appropriate port to see if it responds. Assuming the server is live, enable the proxy extension with said server and try to find a page that will spit back your IP at you. http://www.whatismyip.com/ come to mind. If the IP it lists is the proxy's IP, then your good to go.

If this doesn't work, we need a lot more info to help. Verify port # and you might even need to know what type of proxy it is. |

First try http proxy. If it doesn't work, then try Socks proxy.
FTP proxy uses port 21, SSL port 22. Notice in the proxy list of the recomended site how each listed server includes a port #? That's what services that server can provide a proxy for. Web page proxying is done over 80 and 8080. These are the survers you want for browsing anon. There has to be a setup program for your proxy plugin to allow you to give it lists of proxy servers to try and their relavant ports. Look at what documentation you can find on the developers site.

I often wonder about Steganos too -- where are they pulling their proxy lists from?
