[Linux] Mandrake 10.1 2min Stall on boot?
I'm running Mandrake 10.1 on my Sony Vaio VGN-A290(media center) and for some reason when I boot up it has around a 2 minute stall. It will say
Initializing firewire controller (ohci1394) [OK] *Then pause for roughly 2 minutes then continure on with Starting Net profile: INIT: Entering runlevel: 5 Is there anything I can to fix this or at least make it speed up? Also why i'm asking about linux, what would you guys suggest as a good windows emulator? |

In Mandrake control center there should be an option to enable/disable services at bootup. Look around there and see if you can change anything.
As for a windows emultator, wine (Yes yes, technically not an emulator) can run a few apps and is free. Cedega is good for games but costs money. There are some other commercial ones as well, but I don't know how well they work.

Is there any "failsafe" mode you can boot it into to see if it boots faster? Maybe ACPI needs to be turned off.
If you can boot to a command line, make sure your networking is enabled, and try pinging something (ie. www.google.com). This will tell you that it's working and your DNS is set properly as Cyrnel suggested. I'm also going to refer you to this page: http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/host...0.1_vaio_a190/

Hit f2 at boot so you can see what's being fired up that's taking forever. Could be hardware detection, could be incomplete networking and some net service that needs it. Sendmail was a classic example. Do you have the system functioning fairly well once it finally boots?
