I worked with it some about a year ago, there is a demo cd you can order from MS with a trial of 2003 loaded with all the goodies includeing SPS. I just got the disk in saturday. I believe the whole thing runs in virtual server so no format needed to demo it...

Well, are you talking about the SharePoint Portal Server or SharePoint Services?
The SPS is free and comes with Server 2003. The PortalServer will run you major $$$$. The SPS is quite good for a small (<500) company intranet site. It integrates nicely for authentication through AD. We are using it for File Lookup, searching and Pivot Tables and whatnot through snapins. Also, if you use something like Axapta or Great Plains from MS, then they should be able to talk back and forth between the two systems.
