digital SLR's. 5mp or above. suggestions?
 

im starting a digital photography course next semester and i would need to buy a new digital SLR. the price range is under $2000 and 5mp's or above.

also, is there any such thing as an analogue/digital SLR combo cameras?

I have a Canon Digital Rebel that I bought about a year ago and am happy with that. This is a basic 6MP digital SLR that uses the same sensor as the Canon 10D and can be had for about $800.00 from http://www.bhphotovideo.com. There's a $100.00 rebate on it good until Jan 31st. The complaints I've read about the camera are that it is a rather basic DSLR and it has a 'plasticy' feel to it. (The body is plastic instead of the usual metal) but I'm happy regardless. There are some restrictions on focus and exposure modes that more expensive cameras don't have, but I haven't felt restricted by them; maybe I'm not an advanced enough photographer to care.

Nikon has a D70 available from the same website for about $1000.00 with $100.00 rebate. The D70 is a stripped down version of the D100 and is also a decent camera. The D70 is a bit newer that the Rebel and has some features the Rebel doesn't.

The other thing to consider is the lenses you need to buy. Part of my reasoning for buying the Rebel over the 10D was that it gave me a little more money to spend on lenses, and to buy better quality lenses.

You may want to look at some camera reviews. dpreview.com has some pretty in-depth reviews that I used when deciding what I was going to buy.

Right now, with a lens, I'd say the D70. It's actual quite a bit more capable than the D100 or the Canon Digital Rebel. The D70 with kit lens is an amazing deal. Take a look at the D70 kit, and an SB600 flash unit. If you're looking for a telephoto lens, try something used from KEH.com. The 70-210 AF-D Nikkor is a pretty good deal.

As film+digital cameras go...Leica is making a back for the R9 camera, and there are digital backs for medium format SLRs. However, both options would blow your budget very, very quickly.

If you dont already have any of one kit (nikon, canon), go with the D70. Its a much better built camera than the Digital Rebel. I already had a canon kit, so I didnt have much choice, but if you are starting from scratch--D70. I love my Rebel, its a great camera, but the D70 is just so much better built.

My roommate just got a Sony DSC-V3 "prosumer" digital camera for around $700. It's SLR, but not so high-end that you have to get a loan just to buy one. Hence the "prosumer" name. Here's a link to it on sony's site:

I was very impressed by the camera; it has an enormous and very sharp screen, external flash attachment, integrated small flash, 7MP, works with CF and memory stick, etc etc. Also shoots movies!

yeah i checked that camera out once. its a good camera
