ipod, WMA PROTECTED
Has anybody run into where they couldnt get songs of a CD into there ipod?
We just got Velvet Revolver's Contraband, it wont work with the iTunes properly cause of pre-ripped music that is in protected wma format. I thought an ipod could play wma? |
nope...apple and windows won't play nice on this one....
I say crack drm and encode to aac or mp3 In my opinion that would be still considered fair use but others may disagree (hint: easy way to do it is loop line-out to line-in) |
thanks, jesus, 18 bucks for a CD, and they do this crap
|
Agreed with jonjon. They are being stupid, so we have to be smart. I figure if you buy the cd, you should be able to play it on your own mp3 player. RIAA can't do anything.

rip it to your computer using something other than WMP ( a prog that rips it to mp3 format) and then transfer it to your ipod.

I like to use Easy CD-DA Extraxtor.. works great for me.. and just as a side note WMA files are EVIL!! Stay away from windows media player at all costs if you can
|
Yeah, Sunncomm emailed me back saying exact same thing, burn it to a cd, then rip it from that cd to itunes.
|
I just noticed my "rookie" status, dammit :)
|
If you have a buddy with a Mac, have them try ripping it for you. Frequently, the Mac just ignores Windows-based copy protection.
|
I just use iTunes to rip CD's into Mp3, is EAC+LAME that much better?
|
hmm, wierd, I've burned CD's to my computer in WMP and when I loaded them into iTunes it converted the files to some other file type. They work fine on my iPod.
|
Yeah, iTunes automatically offers to change your WMA files over to AAC or mp3 when it starts up, depending on your settings. iTunes also rips CDs quite well. :)
|
yeah the copyright protection on Velvet revolver is rediculous, they make you download the program BMG put on the CD to get their songs and if you press no they pop the CD out. once it is downloaded it stays only on that computer i tried putting it on a new pc of mine (my last one is dead) and now all the songs are fucked sounding. bastards

It finds some names anyway, not always the right ones!

You absolutely have the right to copy it. You simply don't have the right to distribute it to people who do not own a copy of it. That's what the Fair Use Act is all about.
|
um can't you get a friend with a mac and run ipodrip?

yup...you nailed it perfectly |

d*d, that is an inaccurate statement. Think people taping tv shows. Fair use was put to the test in the 80's when Hollywood tried to sue Betamax over people taping shows (all of the shows, substantial wasn't at issue). They lost as the court said that people merely were shifting when they watched the shows, they weren't copying them for distribution. Same concept applies here. I buy a cd and transfer it to my IPod. It is not illegal, I am merely switching the medium in which I am listening to the music that I legally bought.
For a great article on the Fair Use concept, read this: http://www.dcbar.org/for_lawyers/was...003/access.cfm |
From what I've heard, it's best to use iTunes to rip a cd to go onto your iPod. It's fast, and obviously compatible.

If the cd is copy protected, it's illegal to copy it. |
They make cds in wma format now? That sucks.

They can tell you that they don't like copying and can even try to prevent you from doing so. The fact is that you're not stealing from them, as long as you don't hand copies out to your friends/put the mp3's on a filesharing network/sell ripped CD's/etc... They don't lose anything from someone buying a CD and listening to it by himself/herself, be it an mp3 player, computer, CD, tape. |
Audiograbber in conjunction with lame works pretty well for reencoding about anything. I thought you were legally allowed to make one back up copy of all purchased digital media? I don't think it should matter if you store it on your ipod.
