If you plugged in the iPod then installed the system software, it may continue to show up as an unknown device even though it's working. The display on the iPod's screen should turn to a crossed circle, and a new icon should show up in your system tray, one that looks like a grey card with a green arrow over top of it. You'll also see another drive letter show up in Windows Explorer. To actually transfer files, you'll need to use a separate bit of software, you can't just copy the files over in Windows Explorer. The most popular choice is iTunes, but I personally prefer the ml iPod plugin for Winamp. I'd also suggest you start reading iPodLounge religiously. They've got a load of useful articles for beginning through advanced iPod users, and they'll keep you up to date on the latest happenings related to the iPod.

Still says device unkown but it's working properly. Does it have anything to do with Windows updates, I don't download those. My computer also doesn't know what those USB memory sticks are either but that was my friends so I didn't care to look into it. I'll check that other website you gave also thanks and if anyone here can help me that would rock!

you really should download the windows updates... if you dont your extremely vulnerable to all kinds of attacks... windows is a huge amount of stuff... and there are vulnerabilities in it... the windows updates fix those vulnerabilities as they are found... and yah they also use them to update problems with functionality... so they would probably fix your ipod problem.... go install service pack 2 and the updates since...

Derwoods right, you have to go in to your hardware settings and remove all traces of it being installed, reboot, install the software then connect the ipod, I had the same problem with my netmd that i just got.
