Thunderbird 1.0 Released
So the Mozilla dudes have released Thunderbird 1.0! I was so not expecting it this soon as i am currently using v0.9 and it seems like there's a lot of work to do. I haven't installed 1.0 yet because I would like to see what others think of it first. Is it wonderful and perfect and just as mind bogglingly brilliant as we have been made to expect of Mozilla since they aced the Firefox by v1.0 or... did they rush the release? I've heard of a couple of bugs like TB hanging when trying to save messages to the sent folder. Is this true?
I share this PC with my sister and mother but i'm the only one who uses TB at the moment as they are used to using outlook express and dont like a lot of change. If TB is much better and very user friendly then I'll definitely switch TB to the default email client on the PC. So who has tried it? Any good? EDIT: I've just installed it half an hour ago and it looks a lot cleaner and friendly with a few more icons and a few different ones too. The account options page definitely lets you configure it more freely and the options are easy to use too. Some of it may be slightly technical for very new newbies but I'm sure they'd pick it up soon enough. The smart junk mail detection is still there in all its glory. I have only used it for half an hour so I'll be back to comment on its performance after i have given it a good period of use. |
Before your edit i was going to say that i want to wait till you install it. I dont want it crashing my system if it crashed yours. /snicker. But i'm installing it now also
|
I'll switch to it once they get a Palm Conduit for my smartphone. Until then... I'm stuck with Outlook 2003.

I just loaded Ubuntu Linux on my second PC at home, and I loaded both the Evolution mail client and the Thunderbird so I can try them both and decide.
I really haven'y spent a considerable amount of time, but I like the look and feel of thunderbird, probably because it is a lot like the Mozilla mail client. But I also like Evolution beacuse it has all the funcionality of Outlook, with a similar interface, but without the built-in Microslop bugginess and security canyons. So, still have not decided, but I think I'm going to go with Thunderbird, just because. I seems really fast, esepcially on Linux, and I'm only runnind an older Dell PIII 500 machine. Plus, if I ever do want to switch over, I can always export my stuff to Evolution anyway. So, now that I've shown how totally wishy-washy I am, I have some stuff to do on my new Linux install. By the way, if you run linux, you should find an old computer around and check out Ubuntu. For a brand new distro, it's pretty slick. Peace, Pierre |
Quick update on my findings of TB after a day or so of use...
The program is very slick and seems more streamlined (quicker) than the last version. It still has some quirks such as sometimes it randomly forgets to move mail marked as junk to the junk folder. Not sure what thats all about but its just a niggly problem and i'm going to stick with it because it doesn't appear to ever crash :D |
MOOX has their v1.0 Thunderbird release.
MOOX produces processor-specific releases of Thunderbird and Firefox. They add speed and reliability to an already impressively fast and stable program. Just explore the MOOX site for more info. |
As far as I know, they still haven't built in a handler for microsoft's "Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format" (TNEF) e-mails. This is the cause of those winmail.dat aggregated attachments.
Yes, I know there are handlers out there like fentun, but the reality is a large portion of the world uses Outlook and a mail client without a handler for mails from them is rather unworkable. |
Any reason to update from Eudora 6?
|
Nice client Thunderbird, alot more secure than OE.
Although theres one problem I have with Mozilla products...and thats they seem to memory leak on my system...though I'm beginning to think thats my system...not the softwares' fault :) |
I use FireFox and Outlook 2003.
While I don't really care about Outlook, there is one feature that I really like (and has kept be from switching to Thunderbird). When I get an email, a small, trasparent pop-up comes up in the bottom right of my screen. It tells me who the emails is from, the subject and a small part of the message. I have found that I really like having this feature as it lets me know if the email needs attention or not, without switching screens first. Is there an option like this with Thunderbird? |
KMA, yes there is! It surprised me, but TB DOES have a pop-up notification feature. It's enabled by default.
Although I do know that the program has to be minimized for the pop-up to work. I haven't installed 1.0 yet, BTW, but it worked with the .9 release. |
cool, thanks, I will give the M3 version a shot.
|
KMA, I think you need to download Thunderbird 1.0 off the Moz site first, then goto MOOX and download their package.
|
I did and it was too buggy for me (may have been because of the M3 build).
I kept getting email notifications when I wasn't getting mail and no notification when I actually got a message. I did, however, see the "pop-up" message notification. All it does is pop up and say you have a message (over and over--no messages). The Outlook 2003 pop-up actually gives you info on the email. That way, I know if I want to read it right away or not. Eh, still don't really care for it. I'll stick with Outlook for right now. |

To remedy this, make sure "Automatically download new messages" is checked in the server settings of your account (Under Tools->Account settings). That should work. In other news, i set up an IMAP account alongside my pop accounts yesterday and it handles IMAP accounts nicely. |
