Odd instances of application showing in Processes...
Windows XP Professional is my OS.
Lately I've noticed the iexplore.exe Process staying within my processes list even after I've closed IE... Sometimes it's one or two instances of IE, and t hese processes are also sometimes using a vast amount of resources (up to 40 megs of memory) when there is no apparent instance of IE open. I'm wondering if anyone has some ideas on what could be causing this? I've go tthe AVG virus checker and have scanned no viruses... so.. no ideas here.. I'm not very knowledgable about security but I'm very paranoid about the possibilities of something not good showing up on my system. Any help is appreciated, -me |

cacheman
is an app, tried and true, that does a great job managing resources under Windows. Cacheman can reclaim cached memory that is not immediately released by Windows after an app is closed. I use this all the time just to hurry things up. Check it out. I rate Cacheman as a Top Three download for any Windows workstation. |

You don't have to worry about a virus. Many times memory, as meembo pointed out, will remain tied up although the program has closed. You may see multiple instances of the process because you have opened and closed the program several times and Windows still thinks resources are needed. Now, if you are one of those people who considers Windows a virus, then yes, you do have a problem. But this is just the memory managment "feature" of Windows.

I've tried out spybot and cacheman now, I removed some adware I didn't know I had and cacheman does well at recovering my memory, but this problem still persists.. and I do believe it is a problem. When I try and shut down the computer, it often has trouble closing iexplore and I have to hit the end now button multiple times.

My best guess is that you are probably going to some sites with a lot of popups. I've seen where the popups are off screen and basically running in the background. If you don't have Internet explorer open, you can just manually go into the task manager and kill all instances of iexplore.exe.
I have also seen something similar caused when the java/javascript run by a website doesn't close out properly after closing/moving away from the site. Note: this also helps if you feel that trying to surf is slower than usual. |
