Webpage creation question (Dreamweaver...)

In a nutshell, is there any way to have a song/audio file playing constantly throughout different pages on my site? In other words, I'd love it if I could have a song/audio file begin at my homepage and play throught a user's entire visit of my site without restarting on every new page (I've got lots of pages because my site's a portfolio of art).

Thanks for any info guys.

Although i wouldn't recommend doing so it is possible yes. But how to do it depends on the type of audio file you'd want to use. Is this an mp3? wav? midi? And is the site done using flash or html? any frames?

If you do it with frames, it's possible. just play it in one frame, have the rest of the website move in the other frames.

But as bal asked: why would you want to do that? Music on webpages is generally considered to be a no-no, *unless* it really adds to the experience. This goes back to the good ol' days, when midi files embedded in every single webpage you visited made the internet annoying as hell.

About on par with the raving madness that is animated gifs. Is the music really going to add to the person's experience on the site, or is this just some nifty feature you'd like to do 'just cause?'

Thanks for the feedback guys. Well my portfolio has an overall feel to it and I figured having some really slow, quiet music (with mute option) playing in the background could be nice. I totally know what you mean about it getting annoying though, thanks for the heads-up.

So, no one really described exactly how I'd do it yet, but I think you guys tried to say that I'd have an external window pop up that has it playing and would remain open while they browsed the actual site...?

And yeah, I'm only using HTML so far (I think.. )

Thanks again

An external window would be an interesting option, but no, that's not what I suggested.

Frames are, well, just that. You can have the main page divided into smaller subpages, each with their own HTML page. You could use a small frame at the top with a music file embedded, and simply have the lower (large) frame display the rest of the website. That way, your top frame, with the music, never changes, and keeps playing that music (where a normal webpage would change, stopping the music).

<a href="http://www.echoecho.com/htmlframes.htm">some info, including picture of frame setup</a>

The downside of a frame setup, as opposed to the external window option, is that you'd lose a small portion of your screen to that frame. Also, frames are "out" for that precise reason. But then again, pop-ups are often blocked, and/or are seen as annoying (just like music. )

If you do play music, you have to remember that mp3 files are large, and take a long time to download (unless you take a small song, and have it loop. still relatively large). Midi files, the other option, are smaller, but tend to sound awful.

Great, thanks for the reply. What I'll do is go ahead and finish the page and post it here in about a week when it's done. It's a tad different than your usual page and maybe I can get some good TFP advice as to how I should incorporate music (that is, if I chose to!)

Thanks again
