Incorrect Movie Lengths

Okay I had this problem several months ago and tried to find a solution but never did and then it seemingly fixed itself but now it's doing it again so I will present this to you.

When I play certain movie files I am getting the incorrect duration time during the playback. For example, it is saying that a video is 1 minute and 55 seconds long when it really is around 20 minutes or so. If I leave it playing, it will play to that duration and then the audio will continue but the video will freeze. But if I scroll to a later section of the movie, it will go to that section but still read the incorrect time.

I've tried this with multiple movie players (i.e. Windows Media Player, Divx Player, Winamp) and I have the same problem each time.

I'm currently running an HP Pavillion with a 2.53GHz Pentium 4 Processor with 512MB of ram. I currently installed Service Pack 2 but have had no problems with it and did not have this problem since I installed Service Pack 2 until just today.

Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What kind of movie files are they?

try vlc player, it is by far the most compatible and functional video player i've found. No fancy interface but it can do stuff that others cant like play half finished avi's. www.videolan.org

I think you have a bad or wrong codec.

I've had this happen as well, but usually when the clips were in a play list. They'd play along and then after a couple minutes the video froze and the audio played. But the individual clip played just fine.

I read on some other site that it had something to do with the sync clock dealing with my audio and video, which makes sense but this is only happening with a select few files. It was also one of those sites where everyone is far more advanced than I will ever be so they didn't offer a step by step way of checking this but instead a bunch of jargon that I did not understand.

If it is a bad codec, how would I be able to tell which one it is?

Perhaps it is a syncing problem. I wouldn't know how to tell. There are a couple programs that will check the properties of a vid and tell you more than you ever wanted to know about it. And one of them has a button to resync audio and video, but I haven't tried it. I'll check the name and post it tonight or tomorrow.

I was having that problem. It was a wrong codec. Check/update the audio and vid codes.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

So taking your advice, I found this program called "Sherlock - The Codec Detective" and it turns out that for video, the LEAD MCMP/MJPEG Codec and Decoder are broken along with the WMplug audio codec. What is my next step in remedying this situation?

Add me to the list of people who've had this issue. Nothing more frustrating than jerking off to a nice long porn movie and having the video stop early.

(Did I say that last sentence out loud????? )

I replaced the video codec that was broken/missing and I am still having these same problems. I have not been able to locate the WMplug audio code however. I'm starting to get the feeling that this will fix itself before I can end up fixing it.

Oh, the humanity.....

Did you know that there's a support group for Suddenly Stopper Fappers?

Hhehehe.. Just kidding. There's no known cure except another movie!

I've done a little more research on the problem and several people are citing Video Cache as being the problem. They offer a solution of deleting the Index file but for many people this file seems to be inexistant.
