Immediate help needed
My sisters l;abtop is home from college, she has 62 processes running and im pretty sure thats not normal. ADaware doens't get riud of them, and the system restore isn't working, she has no back up files, and no restart disk, we do however have Hijack this. What needs to be done?
|
Google for a list of start-up processes and compare your tasklist to that list to find out what each process does. Then remove the necessary entries with HijackThis.
A virus/trojan check would not be a bad idea either. |
wel the thing is we have likwe 10,000 not an exaageration, we've deleted over 3000 random letters with nothing else next to them on hijack this, is there away to delete things wihtout checking them indiviually?

Update your virus definitions, boot into safemode, and run a scan. You've got something seriously wrong there.
|
First try clearing your cookies, and temperary internet files.
Next you should run both Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. After that's complete, look in Add Remove Programs, look for anything unusual, and common culprits such as P2P programs that are known to bundle spyware, and some freeware/shareware programs. The basic jist is to remove anything that you don't know what it is. If you do find a program that can't be uninstalled, or it has to connect to internet in order to uninstall, run a search for that program, and you can usually find out how to properly remove it. Finally, check your task manager again, and check the Process tab, make a note of anything that looks out of the ordinary. Next go to google, and search what each process is. If it is a form of spyware, you can usually find out on the web how to remove it. After your computer is clean, download, Mozilla Firefox, and explain to your sister, that she should use Mozilla, and run both Spybot & Adaware often. |
nothing is working, i think this may call for professional help

might go look at housecall.trendmicro.com

How's about one of those boot-from-cd linux cd's? You could use that to make backups of stuff she needs.
|
If you are running Windows XP turn off system restore while doing the cleaning. A virus in a restore point can continue to reinfect your machine.
