Well here's my situation I have a win2k FTP box...I want to move the computer to the basement, but I want to be able to login onto the box from my bedroom, is there a server side of remote desktop from microsoft I can download from the net?

Win2kpro doesn't have terminal services server functionality. You can only use it to connect to a Win2k server.

You'll need to use something like VNC. Lot's of flavours, free, easy to use.
I prefer TightVNC as it's a faster version. Remeber to use good security practices regarding passwords and patching.
Google for download location.

I think only XP Pro has terminal services. VNC is a good choice. Another one is, of all things, NetMeeting. There's a way to configure NetMeeting to enable "Remote Desktop Sharing". With another NetMeeting client, you can control the remote server. You might have to be actually logged in on the remote server, though, not sure. I found NetMeeting was faster than VNC on my Win2K box, though that was years ago. Good thing is that both programs are free.

That VNC program is perfect! It's simple and not bloated and it runs great on my network, Thanks for the recommendation!. Now I just have to install some more hd's and put in a bigger power supply and I can move it to the basement

You can put terminal services on win2k pro, its just not native to it, all you have to do is use the termserv client connection on the server side and have 2 blank floppy disks with you. then install the client on your win2k box.

I prefer TightVNC (www.tightvnc.com). AFAIK, they've put in some compression schemes that aren't strictly VNC-API standard, but make VNC connections over a slow network connection (like the internet) much better. It's also completely backwards compatible with other flavors of VNC. I don't have any numbers, but TightVNC has always felt more responsive to me than other VNC flavors.
