Ads 234 Removal

Okay, somehow I got this Ads234 crap infecting my system and it is seriously slowing things down for me. It seems to be a bitch to scrub it off my system and I was wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this and what they did.

Have you tried the standard Adaware/Spybot in Safe Mode?

Yeah, that is what I tried first. I use Spybot with some regularity cuz it is pretty comprehensive, well except for this it seems.

This may seem obvious, but are you sure your spybot has the latest definitions?

I also recommend using a program called 'hijackthis'. once you've run it, post the log up here. some of us can help you figure it out.

Step 1: Download newest versions of Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Hi-Jack This
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Hi-Jack This: http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Step 2: Restart computer, boot into safe mode.
Step 3: Run Ad-aware and update definitions then check for spyware
Step 4: Run Spybot and update definitions then check for spyware
Step 5: Run Hijack This and update it then check for possible Hijacks
Step 6: Run Msconfig (type "MsConfig" into the run command), on startup, uncheck any boxes of programs that you do not want starting up.
Step 7: Run your antivirus program, update definitions, then check for viruses/bots/trojans.
Step 8: Restart computer

Delete the bold, any BHO with no name/file. Delete the file with the 2 ?s before it, any program that has the word "Search" in it, and any other process that jumps out to you as odd.

allright, well your problem is the bastard program known as:
gcasServAlert.exe

[everything else in the list of running programs seems benign]

I did a google search on it, and you're not the only one with problems of it
[i.e. http://forums.thetechguys.com/archiv...p/t-11020.html ]

Other tips, using the internet browser FireFox 1.0;

You have to configure ad-aware, do this by clicking on settings [top right hand corner] and then scanning - MAKE SURE ALL OF THE BOXES UNDER 'MEMORY AND REGISTRY' ARE CHECKED GREEN !

Then, that should clean out everything, even the stuff that attempts to recreate the spyware that hijacks your browser.

Good luck and let us know your status.

PS - Remember to keep your windows updated !

Thanks!

Safe mode only loads the necessary drivers and programs to keep Windows running. If the spyware/adware is running in the backround, it might be smart enough to tell Ad-Aware to pass over it. Running the programs in safe-mode gaurantees that the spyware programs will not be loaded into the memory.

Like what was said before, delete any BHO's that have no name and no file.

Oops, forgot. The bold items can be deleted. Just in case, make a backup of the files. It should do it by default ("backup" folder on desktop).

Oh, and I would recommend you start using Mozilla Firefox. It is an amazing browser that has no spyware/adware issues.

i just downloaded the mozilla. do i need to do anything to IE like uninstall it or anything? thanks

edit: i also downloaded spysweeper and have run all of my adaware/spy killer things in regular and safe mode. i deleted everything that was suggested to delete in my logfile, yet the popup that i described in my earliest post is still showing up....what do i do, if you have an idea? one just popped up and said that my computer is infected with spyware. the top of the box said "messenger service"

on another note, when i use firefox, sometimes websites that i know exist don't show up. an error box pops up and says that the website "whatever" does not exist. any thought?

i really appreciate your help in this.
