My Latest Case Mod Project : "The Rustbucket"
I saw BoCo's Case posted here so i thought id post my latest project, keep in mind that its not finished yet :p
My inspiration for this case was the Fallout series of games if any of you have played them http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/r...et-chassis.jpg Heres how she started , painted the chassis http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-side.jpg Heres my first test of the Faux Effects Rust Paint im going for in the style http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/r...t-leaktest.jpg And of course the All Important Leaktest before i install my water cooling sytem http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/r...ket-redone.jpg As you see here i redid the front face with epoxy to allow my to put in some of the dials i want in the front (who needs a floopy :p) that a rough edge before i sanded it up. ' And now the final product :p http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-pic1.jpg http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-pic2.jpg Ok now a little explnation on the front :D All of the dials you see are scalvaged from a B-17 bomber. The large one is a Tachometer that i am working to mesure the CPU utilization (sill working some bugs outa that one, more details later) The Top left, is a low Oxygen Blinker that im using with a ultrabright red LED to single HDD activity. Above the dials are several switches, controling the lights and power :D More pics http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-pic3.jpg I used Fence hinges to give me a sucide case door, and a Trapdoor pull ring to open http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-pic4.jpg http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-pic5.jpg I know it may not be everyones style , but shes my baby |
Dude man, that is a mean looking case.... I can't wait to hear about the CPU project you have kicking... that will really be cool once you finish it.....
|
Very nice :D
|
everyone does case mods these days, I should consider doing some myself.
Who said cases have to be box shape? I would prefer something more like this http://www.toyboxarts.com/gallery/ex...iMWP3w0800.jpg exept in windows of course :D |

Scapegoat - Awesome case, really original. I tip my hat to you. Also, Quote:

Nice case there - The fallout look is a good one - It's a shame you can't get the texture of real rust That would look cool |

But unless i wanted to scratch it up and leave it out in the rain for a few days, its pretty close to rust as i wanna get :p :D (electronics, and flaky bits of metel do not mix as we kno :p) Im also gonna be borrowing an airbrush from a friend sooner or later to see if i can get the look a little more detailed. |
Pretty cool looking--trying to make it look like it's been in the ocean rusting for a few decades! If you really want to get that look, sandblast the paint off and stick it in a pond for a week--totally authentic rust and corrosion! :D
Those side hinges do a good job of keeping the theme going. |
That is a REALLY cool case you've made there. I hope it ends up on a magazine cover.
Very nice job. |
really excellent case there scapegoat. i quite liked the dials and stuff you have on front.
i need to get a better case anyways, im thinking of making an all stone case. great natural cooling=) |
scapegoat: That is sweet! I like it a lot, and the dials are awesome. The fact that they will actually "work" is quite impressive.
Also, I liked the Fallout games a lot, and it is nice to see them being recreated elsewhere. :) Kudos. |
sweet looking case... great idea.
|
that is fuggin awesome! love the B17 stuff.
|
Awesome case mod! I'm personally not really into case mods, but this strikes me as a sweet project anyway. :)
For measuring CPU util etc. you might be able to do that by interfacing your tachometer to a serial port and writing a program that gets CPU util from the OS and writes it out on the serial port. Maybe if your tachometer uses voltage levels, you might be able to adjust those with an A to D converter between the serial port & tachometer. I'd try to make a more concrete/helpful suggestion but I don't know the hardware interfaces there. :) |
Post removed.

Very cool. For the rust texture, you can mix paint with Elmer's glue until it's thick, paint it on, then blot it with a wet paper towel. gives you a visibly rough surface.
|
Still just as cool as when I saw it the first time (bit-tech or pheaton forums ???).
Excellent case. |
Holy shit, one of the best case mods i've ever seen
How long takes it to make this one ? |
DJ Teac- Took me about 3 months, but in real work time probably only about 2 weeks, with my job i dont get much time LOL
DuckDuck - Probably on PheatonForums, havent made much progress since the last time :p Its Slow going Oberon - You are absolutly right about the Serial interface with the tachometer. I Have it setup exacly that way.... The only issue is finding the proper settings to make sure the Tach Redlines at 100% , they dont exacly make manuals to B-17 Tachometers readly avalible :p so its taking alot of experimenting. Rekinom - ya i could buy it but where would be the fun in that! :D |
|
You get props for the gagues and switches in the front.
|
that is one of the coolest case mods ive ever seen!
amazing job! |
nice mod... the faux effects are really nice
|
Now that is a rockin' case! I love it. Now, we see the case, we see the keyboard...what about the mouse and the monitor? I've got a couple ideas up my sleeve yet, but I'm waiting for warmer weather...for the most part, it's just the black paint, and stuff, although, I'm looking for a little more to it. And, the front of it will be something we're not used to seeing.
|
That is beautiful! All those fans, water cooling, add an ice maker and I would get rid of the fridge!
BoCo, you guys need to hook up and conquer the case mod world! |
that really is something else.
fantastic. great stuff. inspiring even! |
I like it...never seen anything like that before. You should think about actually letting it rust...then seal it with something...epoxy resin or some sort of polyurethane?
Looks sweet lke it is though...the orange lights work well. |
scapegoat,
Very creative, and VERY nicely done. There is nothing like the feeling of facing your beloved computer with a whirring metal cutter and a can of spray paint! |
Dude, thats fucking awesome. Took lots of creativity. Mad Props for you.

Man,
That's one of the more original mods I've seen. Sweet work man. |
Awesome creation dude! I am still waiting for the day that I mod out my computer.
|
Very cool case, Made me think Im taking and old PRIME Risc based machine out of service Its got a awsome large metal case so who knows?????
|
Nice job! It's got me thinking of some ideas for my 'puter.
|
Very well done case mod! All those dials just make it so freakin' sweet! If it could only make an old school machine hum and whitsle sounds when you turn the knobs...
|
very nice... good mod... you could add a die to the water cooling... maybe a black to make it look like oil.... or a brown so it looks muddy...
|
Quote:
http://www.chillypc.com/pics/erron/rustbucket-dirt.jpg Its actuclly a red UV die, it shows up brownish in the light but a darkish red-brown , bloddy type collor under UV. (you will have to forgive the mess, looks alot better now :p) |
That looks sweet! The case is just amazing. I don't care for the keyboard, the white keys kinda throw off the theme. I'd love to see this when its finished.
|
Awesome mod man.
I like the added touches of the hinges and gauges. Two thumbs up! |
Really like what you've done and is quite unique. Nice.
