thx, will check, cheers

edit: does anybody know of a mirror, both sites are down for me

TIA

bendsley 11-09-2004 06:08 AM

I would say, Firefox version 1.0 was publicly released today, and not say, their final version. =) Because Lord knows, I hope it's not their final version and that they continue to do kickass work.

Oh yeah, the servers over at mozilla.org and spreadfirefox.com are getting hammered, so please find and use a mirror.

try here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.o...efox/releases/ it will redirect where it needs to go.

thx, seems we're psychic ;)

Remember, the Mozillazine forums will be overloaded for at least a day or two. Any questions, ask them here, and we'll see who answers first!

SecretMethod70 11-09-2004 08:16 AM

Fixed the version references :)

I'm using it right now - fresh install - and it's excellent :D Of course it's not shockingly different from v0.10, but it's running well either way. :)

I really like the new start page:
http://www.google.com/firefox
(Before you conspiracy theorists get your panties in a bunch, there's a <a href="http://www.google.com/ie">similar page</a> for IE as well.)

It would have been nice though if they used an XUL version of the page (and if it were centered):
http://www.google.com/mozilla/google.xul

Cycler 11-09-2004 08:28 AM

Got it dl from their website. Like others have said not much different. I miss some of my extensions that didn't tranasfer over but I am sure they will be there before too long.

Also, if you're looking for an optimized build, Moox does an excellent job:
http://www.moox.ws/tech/mozilla/releasebuilds.htm

More info about the builds is located here, including an explanation of the differences between M3/M2/M1:
http://www.moox.ws/tech/mozilla/

KMA-628 11-09-2004 10:26 AM

o.k., I'll bite. what is an optimized build? What are the differences in the "M"s?

Is this set up for a high-speed connection (I am running cable)?

Thanks,

Edit: I am guessing it has something to do with the about:config settings.

Dragonlich 11-09-2004 10:30 AM

Maybe it's a strange question, but why would I use Firefox instead of Opera, my current browser of choice?

Suppose I'm willing to move; can anyone tell me the advantages of using FF??? And I'm looking for advantages over Opera, not IE...

thanks.

It is an interesting question. Unfortunately, I haven't used Opera for a couple of years, so I can't give you complete answers. (At the time, Opera was annoying me with some problem or other, and Phoenix 0.3 or 0.4 was finally becoming usable.)

In general, Firefox is well set up for the basic user, and if you like to get your hands dirty, you can customize the hell out of it and make it work exactly the way you want it to.

Also, unless you purchased Opera, you will be able to get more usable window space because you won't have to see that advertisement.

Give it a shot, it is free. And you will probably run into a few things that are done differently, and you will wonder how to get them back. Ask here, there's probably a hidden setting in about:config or an extension that will make it work the way you want.

Elitegibson 11-09-2004 10:58 AM

Hooray for new Firefox. Not much change from 1.0PR like most people have been saying. As usual it's much faster at rendering web pages than IE. Of course some pages still favor IE, so I installed the extension that adds "View this page in IE" to the right-click menu.

DDDDave 11-09-2004 11:05 AM

Maria Bartiromo is running a special piece on the Firefox browser on CNBC this afternoon at 4pm.

I would expect the website to be jammed.

KMA-628 11-09-2004 11:16 AM

o.k., answered my own question.

I downloaded and installed the M2 optimized FireFox (from Post #11) and it is much, much better then the changes I made to FireFox based on the FireFox forums.

Highly recommended!

Paradise Lost 11-09-2004 11:46 AM

TheAgent, thanks for that MOOP link, just got Firefox 1.0 then cranked that bad boy out,
seems pretty nice.

Hopefully I'll find some difference between this and the Preview Candidate...

Mobo123 11-09-2004 03:16 PM

Make sure you backup your bookmarks before you download 1.0. !!!!!!

Hmm... the mozilla design is simple, yet elegant. IE? Blech. Unless I'm missing something by viewing it within FF (probably  ), it's pretty fugly.

But, yay Firefox!

tellumFS 11-09-2004 04:40 PM

Downloading it now...and it is v..e....r....y...s...l....o....w.

Meh. The price for early adoption or something like that. :)

edit- It looks like Thunderbird has also recently been updated to .9. Personally I'm looking forward to a 1.0 of Thunderbird as well as firefox. With the exception of my school have stupid servers and not letting me send outgoing mail, Thunderbird has been awesome.

Jeff 11-09-2004 04:59 PM

Works like a charm.

greytone 11-09-2004 06:00 PM

OK, I have a dumb question. I switched over to Firefox months ago, but recently my computer went kaput and I had to buy a new one. One of the first things I did was download Firefox and I just downloaded the new version. The only problem I have is in assinging my homepage. I had no problem with this on the old machine, but now Firefox ignores my homepage designation on the control panel. Obviously I am missing something, what is it?

soccerchamp76 11-09-2004 06:02 PM

For the M1, M2, M3 questions
M1 is optimized for SSE2 instructions, which is on P4's and almost every processor for the past 3 years. M2 is optimized for lower processors, and M3 is optimized for processors like Pentium 1.

shadowalker 11-09-2004 06:26 PM

thx, i was waiting for this before i downloaded it.

Actually, you've got that backwards

M3 is for SSE2
M2 is for SSE
M1 is for MMX

Follow the 2nd link given above by TheAgent for more details.

Hmm, it worked fine for me. Went to tools > Options > General and it's at the very top.

brandon11983 11-09-2004 07:42 PM

I still prefer Safari to Firefox. I love Firefox on PC, but on Mac Safari just gives me more functionality.

laconic1 11-09-2004 08:18 PM

Just emerged it on Gentoo, works well so far, no major changes from the Preview Release. The themes I had installed all worked out of the box. It's good to see it at a 1.0 release, I have been using it since Phoenix 0.5 and have never had a problem with it.

The option in the Windows Control panel is for IE - you need to use the Tools | Options menu in firefox to set your default page.

greytone 11-10-2004 03:58 AM

To SecretMethod and Spindles, thanks. I just forgot how I did it before. I was born to early to ever catch up with the whole computer thing and really know what I am doing.

the optimizations span all kinds of areas - Moox implements mmoy's code optimizations (i know that some involve image rendering)... additionally, SSE and SSE2 code are used where possible in M2 and M3 builds respectively, which provides a speed increase on modern CPUs...

Additionally, there are some settings that you can adjust that can also provide a nice speed increase:
http://www.mrtech.com/cgi-local/msgb...t=ST&f=11&t=87

I'm currently using the M3 build with those user.js settings and it is FAAAAST...

SecretMethod70 11-10-2004 05:53 PM

Gotta love Firefox, and with the Yahoo! Companion knock-off, I finally can switch off of IE. (I use multiple computers, and like having all of my bookmarks synchronized on all of my computers. I've been using Y!C for so long that I can't bring myself to drop it.)

joofoo 11-11-2004 07:23 AM

Looks and runs great for me.. thanks for the heads up and information.

Super Model 11-11-2004 07:31 AM

Can anyone tell me why firefox is that good vs any other browser (netscape, IE). I use IE and i just don't know the differences. Can anyone please explaine this to my dumb head. :)

simple answer: Better security

next simple answer: It isn't made by microshit err microsoft..

also the features that are on FF are much better. Live Bookmarks, Tabbed browsing and the great extensions make it a much better browser by far. I say check it out and see what you think. If you don't like it unistall it, but I'd be willing to bet you make you it your default browser ;)

Check out the official answer here: Firefox - Rediscover the web. My favorite feature is the Find Toolbar, along with certain advanced settings. I can just type to quickly navigate to any link on the page with that string in it, or if I begin with the '/' key, find any phrase quickly. I use this constantly, and swear at other browsers when that feature isn't available.

As much of a fan as I am of open source and free stuff, Microsoft does make some good products.

Their business class solutions: Navision, Axapta, Solomon and Great Plains are quite good for ERP/CRM applications.

Office: De facto standard at the moment. We use exchange and outlook where I work. I used it because it's the best solution for what we need. Not sure what we would do without it.

Maps/GPS: Mappoint is really nice.

I'm not ragging on you for not liking microsoft, I'm not a fan either. But don't always bash an entire company because of one program you don't like.

My 2 cents.

SiN 11-11-2004 10:19 AM

Ok, I'm using the M3 optimised, and it does seem notiseably faster...

but can someone please tell me how to change the damn icon back to the FF default?
