I just searched Google for 'shn mp3 conversion' and found a few links. This place has a plugin for Winamp so you can play .shn files. I've never heard of this format. The sites I just glanced at say that converting to MP3 is a bad idea because you lose all the quality preserved by .shn files but I can't tell the difference between CDs and MP3s in most cases anyway.

shn is a lossless compression format, so you get exactly CD quality but at only about a 50% compression ratio.

the mkw Audio Compression Tool (mkwACT) will do the conversion from SHN to MP3. you can go here for more info on the software:

http://www.etree.org/mkw.html

please note... if you're wanting to convert SHNs of live music concerts and you intend to trade them, please do NOT trade the MP3 copies you make for yourself. it's fine to make MP3s to put on your MP3 player, but MP3 is a LOSSY format.

Your first answer to converting any sound file to any other sound file with a Windows machine is dBpowerAMP Music Converter. Freeware and very powerful. I went from FLAC to AAC to get files onto my iPod with this.

Might I ask why you want to convert a lossless file to a lossy file? Is there a program that you like to use that cannot read SHN?

The entire point of SHN is to be able to listen to media that has not been altered in any way eg. RoIO's.

Why you would actually want to go to the trouble of downloading SHNs and gum up the works by losing all that information is beyond me. Ugh. Google is your friend!

There are plugins for all the most popular audio programs. There is SHNAmp for WinAMP, a SHN, FLAC etc plugin for foobar2000, there's even a plugin for XMMS! Go out and fetch one.

Don't go trading anyone your lossy files. People who trade live concerts are serious about their hobby and will publicly shun you for releasing concerts in MP3 format - watch out.

Some of us just happen to not have infinite hard drive space =P And hearing that can't or doesn't care to tell the difference. (If they are well encoded anyway, like Ogg 160+ kbps, but once you get to 160 and below with MP3s it can be painfully obvious.)
