Switch: Apple to PC

Has anyone switched from primarily using Apple (OSX) to PC (XP)?
If you haven't considered switching (back) to XP, why not?

I got my first mac, a G4 notebook, a year and a half ago and haven't had any desire to switch back. Just wondering whether I'm missing some new great benefits of the PC.

I use an XP at work everyday. I just got an iMac G5 at home, as the latest descenent in a line that stretches back to an Apple //e. I know what it takes to keep each of them in proper operating condition, and I greatly prefer Apple's approach.

If one has only had experience with Apple OSs, then I can imagine a switch being a bit bumpy. There are things that you'd like, but there are so many things that are different and can be confusing. Windows is not designed to be as user friendly as Mac (IMO). Thankfuly there are basic rules that are shared with both operating platforms. Things like the point and click mouse, folders, programs and alias', and a lot of similar programs can make the process a little easier.
Use what serves your needs best.

I hear that Windows XP Professional has a little yappy dog that jumps about when you need to search for a file. That's so Professional users don't get confused and think they're doing something else like finding a proper OS.

I've just done the opposite.
I got a Mac last week after years on Windows. I'm still in the OSX learning curve and its slow going almost to the point of discouraging.
And I first started on a Mac IIci.

I don't know why anyone would even think about using windows again after being on a mac...so seamless it should be illegal to own these things

It is also really easy to set it so you never see the fucking dog ever ever again. It is just annoying.

I cannot fathom anyone going back to XP after living with OS X. It would be obscene. XP's file handling methodology is ludicrous compared to that of OS X.

I have a G4 powermac at home, and PC laptop at work. The G4 is still running OS9.2 (can't get myself to move up to OS X). I own the PC as a business necessity, because virtually all businesses out there use PC's. My clear preference is the Mac, however, which is so slick, user friendly and intuitive. Too bad Macs and PC's don't work well together...I'd pitch the PC in a heartbeat.

soopafreek 10-29-2004 06:33 AM

i like my new mac, and i like my old xp machine too. i like dabbling in linux as well.

seriously, discussions like these are really a matter of preference, and loyalty to one type of computer over the other is like pledging your undying loyalty to chocolate over vanilla.

just my 2c.

I don't know if this is a switch, but:

Always had PCs, but I got a Mac at one point about two or three years ago, used it (in conjunction with my PCs, running a variety of Windows and BSD operating systems), and decided that it wasn't for me. I just didn't like MOSX at all - I saw no need to pay the extra money to buy PPC hardware to run it, plus I didn't like the GUI (though I could have ran my own - but then what's the point if I'm paying for a Mac?), etc. Also, I'd rather use my money to buy upgrades to let me play more games than to get the newest & greatest Mac, which wouldn't let me play so many games. :)

Still happily using WinXP, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and Gentoo.

I prefer the ability to change processors if I want without being restricted because the OS is proprietary. I know windows is proprietary as well, but will run on anything that is x86 based (intel, cyrix, amd). I run linux, and have it running on several machines with different processors and love that ability too.

I'll stick to the PC platform, due mainly to the fact that I don't want to buy expensive hardware to do something that I can do with a PC minus the pretty looks.

I'm going to make a prediction about the next 100 posts on this topic:

PC users will talk about the upgradibility options, availablility of software, much lower prices, and simplicity of XP.

Mac users will argue that PCs suck and OSX was made by God himself and the code was given to Mac on stone tablets. They will also say that Macs don't cost that much and the all the software you *really* would need is readily available on a Mac.

Do we really need to have Mac vs PC Part 197,845,647,987,456,132,465,792,464?

PCs suck. OSX was made by God himself and the code was given to Mac on stone tablets.

Oh, sorry. :)

I have a 2GHz dual G5. I really like it. I'm currently considering building a Wintel PC so I can do more work at home. That'd mean I continue to do most of my home stuff on the Mac, but I'd be able to figure out work-related issues at home. And I've got a class coming up where I'm gonna need a PC at home. And I want to try the new Counter Strike, too. :) (the truth comes out)

aliali 10-29-2004 01:04 PM

I'm really just wondering if people have switched back to pc and liked it better than they used to or if the upgrades have improved it a lot. I switched to Mac b/c my Windows98 kept freezing up and b/c of security. Am I missing out on a great new Windows world?

Eliminator 10-29-2004 02:15 PM

I have a PC and am thinking about adding a Mac laptop. Are there any networking issues that I should be concerned about? Is emulator software necessary?

TIA.

denim 10-29-2004 05:33 PM

Depends on what you want it to do. If you want it to run Windows software, yeah.

hulk 10-29-2004 11:01 PM

With Panther, though, Mac/PC Networking is about as simple as it gets. Powerbooks are great, the lower-range iBooks are great value for money. In fact, portables make up most of Apple's sales, iirc.

sadistikdreams 10-30-2004 02:11 PM

I just find it annoying as fuck when I use my ma's laptop.
It could just be because she keeps a whole bunch of worthless shit on her HD.

Amazing how in your argument against the battle between Mac and Windows, you attack Mac users. No one alive has said OSX was made by God. Obviously you were being sarcastic, but you showed no such cynasism against the Windows crowd. Give me a break. :hmm:

I vote for banning all who participate in the Mac PC attacks, including (but not limited to) people who try to hide attacks in seemingly non partisan posts.

Wyodiver33 10-31-2004 02:55 PM

kutulu summed it up quite well. Buy whatever you farking want to. What I think would be interesting is OSX on th PC.
