Bit Torrent and .rar files
 

O.K., I downloaded a movie that is a "kvcd" file with a .rar extension.

I am not sure what to do with this.

Do I extract the files? Is there a conversion I need to do?

I have downloaded movies before and burned them to a disc, I just have never come across a .rar movie (I know what Winrar is, just haven't seen it related to a movie).

extract the files into a folder using winrar then open the cue file and .bin file using Nero and it should work. OK I'm not positive it will work but it's worth a shot I guess

We had a thread on this before about 3 weeks ago (I'll look for it later). In which I recommened you use winRar to unpack the file, someone told me that was wrong even tho it worked for me. Last night I downloaded "The Day After Tomorrow" in .rar format and used winrar to unpack it to an .avi.

So that's my recommendation, download winrar and use it to extract the files. In most cases you can just open the first rar archive and select "extract," then choose a directory to extract to and the rest should convert automatically.

(you both are, but guc, you're making assumptions on the type of movie/image format contained within) :p

a rar is rather similar to a zip (or a tar) in that it's an archive (sometimes compressed, sometimes just to store neatly).

hehe.. I figured something was wrong with my idea :p You're the one who always tells me what to do with this sort of stuff .. hehe

I still have 45 hours left on my download so I don't know what the unpacked file will be.

Usually I download .avi's and those are easy to deal with.

What about the "cue" and "bin" stuff. I don't have Nero (I can get it), is that a requirement? Will it burn into a viewable format for my computer?

not sure if Nero is a requirement or not. Last torrent I d/led was a big ass .bin file after unpacking.. so Sin told me to open it and the cue file with Nero when I did it automatically started burning and when it was done everything was there all nice and pretty.

You shouldnt need Nero, just any decent cd-burner software that will support those image files. Ive just always used Nero, and its treated me well :) You could even use a program like Daemon tools that will mount that cue/bin file up like a virtual cd-drive and skip the burning altogether.

That is my preferred method lately with .bin and .cue, .iso's and .img files...why waste the disc! :thumbsup:

Another option for bin/cue files would be something like VCD gear. It saves the hassle of mounting and unmounting stuff inside Daemon tools. Open the file in VCDgear, and it will export it as an mpeg, then your ready to watch it anytime u want with no mounting.

I opened the .cue file in Nero and hit enter, five minutes later I had a working disc.

You don't need to waste discs on cd-images. Use Alcohol 120%. It automatically creates a virtual cd/dvd drive on which you can mount the cd-images directly. It fools the OS into thinking you have another drive. I use it to play movies, playstation games (point the emulator to the virtual drive to read the "discs"), and PC games that don't have no-cd patches (D2, Starcraft, etc.)

Daemon Tools can also do this, but I think Alcohol has better features.
