Password protecting folders?
 

I have a friend who is looking for a easy way to put password protection on folders in xp without using xp login access. It needs to be a free use program and fairly simple to use. Any ideas?

No one knows?

I googled the same topic awhile back and was able to find programs, but none free.

The average price seemed to be in the $20-30 range.

Hmmm, not really looking for an encryption type program necessarily. These are folders that are accessed pretty regularly, he just doesn't want people to find his porn stash, lol.

can I be nosy and ask why xp login access can't be used? is it cause he's using xp home? it's really as easy as setting folder permissions...unless he's using home..

He's using XP home... he even has legitimate copies of all his software...

Make the folder hidden

I'm not sure hes smart enough to remember where he put them...

Try putting them into a rar/zip folder with no compression. Just password protect them! It's pretty well the exact same thing as a locked folder, and for added security just make it a hidden file in a well known folder.

This friend with the porn collection. . . wouldn't happen to by you? We're all friends here!

Onlly problem with this is that you will always have to re-extract the files if you want to access them. A real pain doing it all the time.

The only good programs that can do this require you to purchase them. They aren't too expensive and do the job well. Best one that comes to mind is Folder Guard.

I've used Privacy Safe before.

It is indeed shareware, but after the trial period all I ever encountered was a "nag" screen. You could still use the program. You can password protect up to two folders (you can modify which two) and it runs in stealth mode.

I don't know if that is still the case, but it's worth checking out.

It's actually not me, I keep porn in a folder on my desktop labelled Pr0n! Its a friend with a live-in gf.

Compressing them into a zip/rar with a password is the best choice in my opinion.

I remember when I used to share a computer with my parents... To get to the pron you had to go into the games folder in the start menu, then a hidden folder, then a maze of about 25 more folders filled with random music files, legitimate pics, games, programs and documents.

Too easy now. I just have a folder on my desktop called New Folder with all my pron.

Here's a suggestion. Have him create a virtual hard drive and disconnect it. When he needs to access it, just reconnect it. Chances are, the GF won't know about it. I actually don't know how to do this, but I heard it in a similar thread.

Personally, I'd go the zip file option. with xp, you can right click a zip file, explore it and look at the movies or pics without extracting everything.

I meant to setup some type of a virtual drive that could be enabled and disabled, zipping is just kinda bleh...

he could always buy a thumb drive with encryption and put it on there, unless he has 40gb of porn or something..
