P4 478 or 775?
OK so I've been debating building a new system with a Pentium 4 chip. I've been looking at socket 478 chips, but I see at newegg they are selling the new 775's cheaper! So other thenless mobo choices is there any reason to go 478 over the newer 775?

- 775 motherboards generally have PCI Express slots, giving you less choice in videocards right now (but what about two years from now?).
- 775 mobos pretty much *need* SATA harddisks. - 775 coolers are LOUD as hell, and there's not many replacement options around yet. (compared to the silent options for 478) If I were to buy a new P4 right now, I'd be hard pressed to buy the 775, mainly because of the cooler; I want a silent system. OTOH, one cannot help but wonder about the PCI Express v.s. AGP videocards - what will AGP do in two years time? Will it go the way of PCI (low-end only), and if so, how soon? |
