Network 2 PC's
I'll start all over from my previous thread, cuz it had other stuff in it too.
I have 2 pcs, conencted thru a dlink router. (both have xp pro) Both can access internet fine. I need step by step instructions on how to network them so i can access files from pc to the other one. I can play games against the 2 pc's fine, but i just cant seem to share files. I cant use the winxp wizard to setup this network because the wizard always comes back unsucessful in one of the pc's. How do i manually set these two up? Both of them have the same workgroup. |
well, i have a router, shouldnt that serve as a hub?
i know a little bit about networking, but not much |
well, if your sharing internet then they're networked *so you can skip the first step, which is whether they can ping each other.
Give each computer a unique name (right click>properties on My Computer) and make sure they have the same "Workgroup." Now find a safe area to share (usually a folder), because it's generally bad to share whole drives. Right-click on the folder and go to properties. There should be a "sharing" tab. In there click the "shared" checkbox and below that decide if you want write access. Click ok. You can gain access to the files from Network Neighborhood. When you first open it, itll show you network bookmarks. In the left column click on Show Workgroups (or something). Then you should see each computer, and in that each shared folder/printer. There may be a step missing (they moved the "share files/printers" on/off button from NT/98) Let me boot in XP and double check my post =P |
haha, it worked.
thanx! |
i figured out the problem i had, the firewall was on.
|
Yeah... i hate that XP firewall.. I had the same problem, took a really long time to figure out why things weren't working
|
I've come across a few XP filesharing kinks in my experience, but I'm glad you got things working.
