Right Clicking Woes: A Recent Trend

I have noticed something quite annoying and troublesome in the past weeks concerning my computers performance. Every time I right click on a folder, my system freezes. I have to open the Task Manager on end the offending process. What gives? Why on earth is this happening all of a sudeen and what can I do to rectify the situation? Any help, any help at all, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My system:
2.6HT P$
ATI 9800 Pro
M-Audio Rev. 7.1
1.25G 3200 RAM
Windows XP SP2
Logitech MX510

Some apps will integrate themselves into Windows Explorer, adding options to the right-click menus. WinZIP and WinRAR both do it, and I've seen plenty of others, as well. Maybe you installed an app recently that did this, and is now crashing Explorer due to a bug or a conflict? I'd check through the programs you've installed recently, and try uninstalling anything that looks suspicious.

De frag your HDD, when I let mine get out of hand it really slows down my right click function!

I agree with both previous posts; Extra shell extensions, context menus, and hard drive fragmentation will generate problems of that nature.

Prior to defragging, download the program CCleaner (website is the same name ccleaner.com).

CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) cleans up a TON of crap, just like the name says, and that way you won't be defragging the garbage too.

Thanks everyone (in particular for the new utility). I just needed to defrag. It took forever but I think the problem is now fixed. Mucho, mucho thanks.

a suggestion....if you can get your hands on executive software's diskkeeper, get it! you can schedule defrags to run at idle times, so it never gets to the point where it will take forever to run a defrag.

every end user I have installed that program on, loves it, and is all kinds of thankful hhehe.

diskkeeper is a great program. Even if you haven't defraged in a long time it is still fast and uses a small amount of system resources, unlike the defrag that comes with XP.
