internet/router problems
so, for whatever reason, when i have my computer hooked up through my router, i can use ie and such.
however, when i plug my computer straight into my modem, no luck. internet is a no worky. strangely, i can still connect to msn, play games online and such also, everything's very unstable when i have it hooked through the router, it always disconnects and such. so, thats why i hook my computer up to the modem, once my parents are done using the other computer... any ideas where to start?? |

Assuming you're using some flavour of Windoze, try typing the following at a command prompt after changing your connection type (direct vs. routed):
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew add an "_all" to those commands (without the quotes) if you're using Windoze '98. That should get you cooking with gas if you're using DHCP addressing. If not, your computer may be configured with a static 'private' IP address. Go into the properties of the TCP/IP protocol and configure it appropriately for your broadband account - probably as a DHCP address. *IMPORTANT - if it has been configured with a static address, WRITE DOWN THE SETTINGS BEFORE YOU CHANGE THEM. You'll want to reset them later. Hope that helps. AND, I hope I'm not helping you bypass your daddy's proxy server... LOL
