Looks like Hotmail finally stepped up to the plate....

Looks like Hotmail finally stepped up to the plate with more storage space -- I just logged in and found I now have 250MB, more than Yahoo but still not nearly as cool as Gmail. Check it out, in any case!

Are you quite sure? I just logged in right now, and its still telling me I only have 2MB. But then I only use hotmail for MSN chatting, so it doesn't really matter... hotmail would still suck, even with 250MB.

All free hotmail acounts will have 250MB and the ability to receive/send 10MB attachments.

I believe that all acounts should be upgraded by the end of fall.

Actually hotmail still sucks as a mail service, but I've had my account for years (it's my last name only) and I've been sick of having to constantly log in and clean out my junk mail since it's just under the 2mb limit.

And yeah gmail rocks, I love it. I'm trying to move to it as my primary webmail acct. I think their marketing and business plan is great -- the invite-only thing adds to the desire of people to be in the "in crowd", and the 1GB storage is bad ass. It's great how Google has forced all the other webmail portals to up the ante a little

Yeah, it's cool and all, but you can get 1GB for free and NO invites with walla.com *shrug*

wow. Spymac looks REALLY cool. Not only does it ave 1GB of e-mail, but it has POP3 access as well Neither GMail or Walla can say that. AAAND, it has 100MB of web space as well as some other cool features (especially if you're a mac user). Thanks - I finally know what e-mail service I'll be using once I graduate and lose my school e-mail.

EDIT: However, there is something disturbing in their license agreement....

I just checked my hotmail account and still no upgrade from the 2 mb.

As for spymac, I remember the reason why I never bothered with them it's reports like this

http://www.emailaddresses.com/forum/...?postid=251236

Quote:
"This is getting REALLY REALLY OLD. First I lost some of my email, now I have lost the rest. Yes, it is backed up, but still, this is insane. I PAID SPYMAC 40 DOLLARS!!! This shouldn't be happening.

Get you act together, or I will be wanting a refund for faulty services."

Well, as you can see the mail is lost also for the paid accounts. Also, there are a lot of posts claiming missing messages. No reply from spymac support.

The Spymac Team"
I don't know if losing e-mails is still a problem for them but I wouldn't trust themto not lose my e-mails

I haven't had any problems with spymac so far, at least that weren't temporary. For a while some of the messages would show up in inbox but nothing would show up in the box when I went to view them. Might have been a browser or virus problem.

even if hotmail gave a gig, I wouldn't use it. The day I signed up my account, I started getting pr0n spam. I didn't put the email addy out there anywhere, and I'm getting horse fucker emails. fuck that. I stick with yahoo/gmail/email w/my website. I would never allow my kids to sign up for a hotmail acct, just because of the spam that immediatley floods the inbox.

now, do yahoo and hotmail run the same schemes where they keep tabs on every piece of mail (or whatever gmails does) like gmail does?

I don't recieve any 'horsefucker' spam, at least not anymore. Not even in my junk mail. The worst i get is ---_C_i_a_l_i_s_--- mail. And refinancing my mortgage. I don't have a mortgage. As far as I understand it, hotmail does not admit to scanning or archiving mail that goes through the servers. There are no targeted marketing campaigns that have been exposed, although you could ask the boys and girls in Paranoia. I signed up with a secondary hotmail acct that has since expired, but I never told anyone the address. I used it to sign up for the Cook's Illustrated website. It remained spam free for over a year.

EVERY mail server "reads" your mail. How do you think spam filters work? However, GMail targets you with ads similar to the Google Ads on webpages. On the flip side, I'd bet Y! and MSN are making their own database of information about you to target you with ads. I know they at least use your profile as I get a lot of Orlando and FL (where I live) ads and I think I've gotten a couple of local big resteraunts. So if you are paranoid about your "horsefuker" pr0n use something more secure...like PGP your email and make sure everyone you email has their own SMTP server.

Nope, it's true. I got 250 awhile back without asking for it and I most definitly did not pay for it. I could care less really since I hardly use the address anymore, I just keep it for a few odds and ends.

For those of you that have received the storage upgrade, how long have you had your accounts? I have had mine since January '02 and still no upgrade. Also what web browser and operating system do you use to access your Hotmail account? If Yahoo could upgrade all their accounts at once I don't see why Hotmail can't do the same. Both of my Netscape accounts have been upgraded to 250 megabytes.

Adding to the mix: I logged in to my hotmail (for the first time in a month) and also had the 250 MB of space... maybe it's a user thing? I've had this account for about 5 years now and never changed it, so maybe that has something to do with it I know I sure as hell wouldn't pay for extra space, I have another account I use primarily because my hotmail gets too much spam.

On November 2nd, I had both my hotmail accounts upgraded to 250 for no particular reason. I've had one for about five years, the other for three. I haven't received spam at either for a couple years. Never had much, actually. I use outlook to check and send with both of them.

Information for current MSN subscribers:
All existing MSN 9 Dial-up, MSN Premium and MSN Plus subscribers will receive 2GB of online storage and the ability to send 20MB attachments at no additional cost when they become available this fall. No action is required on your part.

All existing MSN Personal Address subscribers will receive 250MB of online storage and the ability to send 10MB attachments at no additional cost when they become available this summer. No action is required on your part.
But... I am still getting 2MB. Maybe its taking them awhile to get to everyone. Almost everyone on the planet has a hotmail account.

I'm still at 2MB. It is probably true that it will take a while for them to get to everyone, but it just seems that they've been saying that they would upgrade our accounts for a looooooooooooooooooooong time..... I'd swear that they even sent out an e-mail stating that the upgrades would be done by the end of summer....
