How well is my system set up for gaming
I'm not very good with computers so I don't really know how well my pc can stand up to gaming.
My system specs MSI KN72GL something with nforce2 integrated sound and graphics. Video memory is at 32mb. Ram is 512mb AMD 2000+ Athlon processor 300watt power supply If you could please just let me know if it's halfway decent or not it would greatly appreciated. Also if upgrades are needed please point me in some direction where I can read up and learn more. Thank you |
ummm if your not gaming or doing anything like that its a good "office computer" the 512 is good the cpu isnt bad if you do play any games at all you could put say 400 bucks into that system and it would be kick ass

I'd up the power supply first of all.....
I have a XP 2500+ and I'm planning on getting the 3200+ and another 512 stick of RAM on top of the 512 I already have. |
If ya got a videocard then your system would do great at gaming. I'd get an additional 256 MB of RAM, but it's not required to do decent. The onboard video is the system's weakest point. If you want a new videocard, name a price range and we'll be happy to help.

Hopefully a price range of less than $250 should do.

I'd get the Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB 256-bit for $200 or the Radeon X700 XT 128 MB 256-bit or the X700 Pro 256 MB 256-bit or the GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB 256-bit. The last three I mentioned aren't out in AGP format yet but they will be soon. Going with the Radeon 9800 Pro (which is readily available now) would be a damn good idea.

Thank you for your input.

What type of games do you plan on playing? Doom 3 will definitely not run that well on your PC. Anything graphics intense will slow your PC to a crawl. Mainly the video card, a more powerful power supple and a 2800+ CPU will help, too.

the only thing you need right now is a new videocard. perhaps some more RAM, but it's up to you. I'd get a Sapphire 9800 Pro from newegg.
don't upgrade your processor or PSU. not worth it. |
The only serious thing that I would say that needs to be changed is definately the graphics card.

How bout this. Upgrade the power supply to 450 or so, I suggest Allied. Radeon 9800 Pro 256 (It's what I have). And 512 more RAM. If your first RAM is PC3200 then make sure you get PC 3200. I recommend Crucial. It's expensive but try www.newegg.com Then you have basically what I have (My CPU is a 2400+), and it can run Doom 3 maxed out, no lag.
I am, as you should if you want to, going to upgrade the processor to 64-bit. I suggest an AMD 64bit 3400+, with the new Asus motherboard. If you're going to do it. |
