problem with graphics card
i'll be playing a game for a while, and randomly these weird rectangle neon green colored textures would pop up as i run, there isn't a whole lot of them, maybe 3 or 4 spread out while i run or what not, i heard that's the beginning of the end of your gfx card, i hope that's not true...it's an ati radeon 9800 pro.....
|
heres a screen of what happens, you'll notice those 2 green textures....http://www.ruinedbydesign.com/hi/moh.jpg
|
could be overheating... what type of card is it?
do you have good airflow in your case? is the fan spinning at full speed? |
it's an ati radeon 9800 pro, my airflow in my case is pretty decent, 6 or 7 fans with a giant heatsink and an add on cooler for the gfx card...i believe the fans are spinning at full speed, how do i check that?
|
frist off are you overclocking your card?
My 5900 ultra was doing that artifacting when overclocking untill i backed the oc back down about 10 pts on my memory and core, that took care of it. 6 or 7 fans count as maybe fair airflow, in my case i have currently 19 fans running. Thats between my gfx 1, cpu 1, case 14(top of case 2, back 3, front 3, side panel 3, bottom 1, powersupply 2),memory 1, northbridge 1, southbridge 1. and no its not loud as hell. with all fans on full its hitting about 40-45 dB's. |
i'm not overclocking my card, no, i dont' know how to, haha....
|
19 fans. I think you're going just a bit overboard.
|
it might be that your running so much stuff that that your power supply cant handle it and your video card is not getting enought juice. i had a that friend installed a gf2 with a extenal tv tuner on an really old compaq. the green led on the tuner was very dim but he did not think anything of it and the tv signal was very snowy and fuzzy. soon after, like a couple weeks. the gf2 died.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned changing the drivers? That's the number one cause for artifacts and graphical anomalies in games. Switch to a different Catalyst (or maybe 2 or 3 versions) and see if that helps.

i just got the latest drivers, i'll try them out
|
i updated the drivers, and things got worse...they got worse than this screenshot too....<br>http://www.ruinedbydesign.com/hi/moh2.jpg

You have 19 fans and your airflow is just considered "decent?"
I have a Prescott CPU and the GeForce6800 and I have three fans (CPU, Case, Graphics card) Why do you need 19 fans? That is just insane. Checklist: Powersupply (try unplugging some of the fans) Drivers Connections |
With 19 fans...wow.....How in the hell do you power all that?
I just have a lowly AMD 3000+ running in mine and five do me fine. (CPU, 2x case, Graphics card and one off the power supply) Anyway.... Certainly check the powersupply and the connections. I once had a videocard wiggle just out just enough to start screwing things up. After a day and a half of messing around with everything but the card. I re-seated it as a last resort. Low and behold it started working right. :) You mentioned the artifacts got worse when you downloaded the latest drivers. What about earlier drivers? Is it just the one game or does it happen when you extensively play any game? I'm certainly not an expert, but it seems to me that if it happens in every game then it would be a power issue, dislodged card or connection. However, if it's just one particular game than I would say it's a driver or a settings conflict. Like I said...no expert....but I hope it helps. With enough troubleshooting and feedback on your part, I can't imagine someone here not knowing the answer. :D |
its not gallopingwanker with 19 fans, its shadowalker
|
Thanks, didn't catch that.
Maybe it is your aftermarket cooler that is possibly screwing things up. |

Contact ATI and have them replace it via warranty. |

thanks for all the feedback! i'll roll back the drivers, reseat, and if that doesnt' work, i'll contact ati! thanks alot...also, medal of honor is the only game it happens in.....
|
i tried reseating and rolling back the drivers, and the texture thing is still getting worse :( ....i guess i'm gonna have to call newegg?....

those funky colored textures mean your grafx card memory is going bad. time to RMA it.
I have gone through 4 radeon 9700 pro cards with this problem. 1st card bought and 3 months later had the problem. sent it to ati, they sent me back the same model but a different serial #. Slapped it in and got the same friggin problem. I send it back and Im starting to get pissed. Ive got the phone # for the guy who is in charge of customer service. They send me back a working card, problem is its a radeon 9500 and not even a pro. By know im about to buy a plane ticket to go woop some ass. They send me back a 9700 pro that worked for 4 months and went bad. Sent it back and they upgraded me to a 9800 pro. As far as Im concerned ATI is shit. I doubt I will buy another ATI card because of the customer service problems. They sent me a replacement card with the same friggin problem. Dumbasses. |
for me 19 fans is just fine. I have 2 psu's in my case. being an old server case. One is powering the fans and lighting, the other is powering my mobo, hdd, vidcard, and drives.
BTW i was doing some reading on google. and it seems you are not alone with having problems with ATI cards and medal of honor. Good luck at getting it corrected. Now i'm not going to rip on ATI, i have a 9700 pro in another system but i dont game with it. Although i do like the card. |
It's not a Windows box, but could I boast about fans? (if only for a moment)
Unix System (SCO V4.0f) 8 drive SCSI Tower - 1 fan per drive. DEC Alpha M3000 System 800 - 3 fans under unit - 1 fan over cpu - 2 fans over memory (768Mb) - 5 fans over each of the stock scsi drives - 1 fan for the power unit When I power this leagacy box on I cringe when I think about the power bill. And that it can wake up our 24wk old baby girl. |
Seems like this problem is now happening to me. I have the 9700 All in Wonder and and not sure if I should contact ATI to replace it or just get me an nVidia. I swapped in my GeForce 3 after trying new drivers, getting a new motherboard and more cooling. Nothing worked so I know it is the 9700 now. Gotta get a solution before Half-Life 2 is out!

Definitely try changing the drivers. This looks like a software issue, perhaps DirectX related. I recommend OmegaDrivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php). DirectX should be updated first, and then install OmegaDrivers, and then install CRT/Monitor drivers. Play around with the settings in the video card's advanced options if you still get this problem. Omega's default settings works fine for me. I recommend leaving as many settings as possible on Application Preference.
