thermal compound?

I'm getting an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton Core proc with retail AMD heatsink. Think I should use thermal compound or not? Why or why not? I'm looking for this to be a home system, I'm not gonna OC this (if I do would I use compound?).

you should always have a thermal compound between the chip and the heatsink. the OC'ers seem to like the arctic silver 3, but you'd probably be ok with most brands.

does the stock heatsink come with an adhesive thermal contact pad? i'd think that it would. that would probably be fine too

Be warned, using anything other than the stock heatsink will void the warranty on the chip...

Not true. Any heatsink certified by AMD will leave your warranty intact. Go to their site and look around.

Be warned AMD considers warranty of the processor void if you use anything but AMD certified heat sink paste.

Stuff that voids your warranty include anything by Arctic Silver, and absolutely any other kind of Heatsink Paste except i believe the list was up to 1 kind the last time i checked.

This is not a joke. I'm serious, check out the AMD website if you don't believe me.

ALWAYS use thermal compound!!!! if you don't, you WILL fry your processor. bad. And, really, as far as I have experienced, the heat sink/paste they give you in the package w/ the processor cools as good or better than any aftermarket ones. No, I don't remember where I read that, or I'd give a link. good luck, though!

The stock phase change pad that comes attached to the retail heatsink will work just fine for running at stock speeds. Your warranty will also remain intact.

AMD's site says "anything AMD certified" but i heard about "anything certified, that came w/ your proc" from people who tried to get their warranty from AMD. It was either here, or at slashdot.


Id suggest using a thermal compound, but i got some shit about it when i tried to return a proc because it was bum (and i am never going there again).

some local computer shop. Id point you to the thread, but it was on the old board.


Here's the story:

I tried returning an Athlon900 proc i got that just didnt work (this was probably last December), it cost me $30. I first had to take it to their tech, to make sure it was a dead proc. As i had already told them, it was dead. Since it was their last 900, they offered me a 1.2 Duron in it's place (other then the fact i dont like Durons, my mobo couldnt take it) So i asked for my money back.. They asked to look at the processor again. Then said "let me have the tech look at it again" He came back and said, "The tech said you put too much thermal paste on it, we cant take it." I explained, "First, I may have smeared it around while trying to wipe as much of the paste as i could off, but I did _not_ put too much. I am very careful with delacite processors. Two, I used a non-conductive thermal paste, so it could not have shorted out." He said I would have to talk with the tech, so i did. The tech's responce was, "I never said it shorted it out, you put too much on and it overheated the wrong parts of the processor." I was in shock at the shit he was feeding me. I had never heard of this ever happening. But just because i hadnt heard of it, doesnt mean it's not true... so i posted a thread.

That store (and the non-tech who "helped me") had always treated me disrespectfully as a ignorant customer. But before this they had never given me (any other) reason not to shop there. Sadly, they are one of the very few stores in my area (Orlando). Since then ive been at a loss as where to get such things as a NIC, floppy drive, case screws, or any other piddely thing you forget or break when working on a computer.


Deciding wether i should post their name... I cant remember if i did in the last thread (i believe a few asked though). Anyway, it is Cheap Guy's (and that's false advertising if they are talking about their prices, and not quality)
