I got the following from Logitech's Web site. Here is the Link .
I hope this answers your question.

A PC or Mac
Your PC or Mac will need to be equipped with a 3rd party 5.1 surround sound card to be fully functional. You may use a 4.1 surround card, or a 2 channel sound card for basic functionality.

Optical or Coax hook up
Simply attach your PC or Mac with an optical output to the z680 via 75ohm digital cable or optical cable. If your PC or Mac supports Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS, the Z680s will allow you to enjoy surround sound. Simply select the digital input you are using by pressing the input button. Then press the effect button until you reach Dolby Digital Movie. If you are listening to music, which is made in only 2 channels, you can up mix your music to simulated surround sound. Simply select the effect you like most.

Stereo — This setting plays your audio as it was made to be, through 2 speakers plus the subwoofer

Stereo 2x - This setting splits the audio signal to the rear speakers giving you 4.1 channel sound

Dolby Digital PL2 Music — up mixes your audio to all the speakers, applying a simulated surround sound effect for the most enjoyable music experience.

6 channel analog input
This input allows you to attach your z680s to any sound card. Whether it´s a 2 channel, 4 channel, or a 6 channel sound card. Simply follow the color coding on the back if the z680s to hook up your speaker system. Change the audio input to Direct by pressing the input button until the display shows “Direct”. For 6 channel surround sound cards, select 6 ch direct by using the effect button. If you have a 2 or 4 channel sound card, simply follow the directions above to up mix your audio to 2x stereo or PL2 Music.

An Xbox or PlayStation 2
Plug your z680s directly to your PS2 or Xbox via digital optical cable (Xbox requires separate purchase of Advanced AV pack as stated above), set the z680s to optical input and Dolby ProLogic 2 Movie mode. Turn on your PlayStation or Xbox without a disc in and go to the system configuration or settings menu. Make sure that Digital Audio out is on. Things to keep in mind: You'll need to make sure your game supports surround sound by checking for the Dolby Pro Logic symbol on the back of your game. If your game doesn't support surround sound, just change the z680s effect mode to Dolby ProLogic Music mode, and the z680's will up-mix your audio for simulated surround sound.

A DVD player
Your DVD player will need to be DTS or Dolby Surround ready. If your DVD play is DTS or Dolby Surround ready, it will be equipped with either an optical or coaxial digital out. Connect your DVD player with a 75ohm digital coax cable or an optical cable. Set your Z680 to PL2 Movie mode via the effect button. Some movies will require you to go to their audio setup and select 5.1 or DTS surround to enjoy movie like sound.

A Mini-disc player or other small portable device
Most small portable audio devices come equipped with a standard 3.5mm (1/8th inch jack). Use a standard 3.5mm cable with male ends on both sides. Connect one part of the cable to your portable audio equipment and the other end to the line-in jack on the front of the Z680 control pod. Set the Z680 to “Direct” mode via the input button and set the desired effect with the effect button.

A Home Entertainment System or other component device with RCA outputs (red and white audio cables)
You'll need to convert the RCA audio outputs of your device to a standard 3.5mm male connector. To do so, you'll need to purchase an adapter or a series of adapters at your local electronics store. On one end of the adapter should be 2 female RCA connectors, on the other end should be a 3.5mm male connector. Once you have the adapter, you can either connect it to the front of your z680 control pod via the line-in jack or in the back of the control pod with the green analog input plug. Set your z680 to Direct mode and choose the desired effect.
