My SBC DSL package arrived, I am going to install Sept 1, 2004. Currently I have AOL.
My requirements...

1. All three kids can go on-line and do homework at the same time
2. Must be significantly fasted than my dial-up AOL account
3. We can all share the printer.

So I ordered SBC Yahoo DSL, with wireless as my oldest daughter just ordered a Dell notebook for college, should arrive soon.

Currently we have three systems upstairs and one downstairs(no notebook yet). I have the three upstairs all connected to a hub, the printer is on one of those systems. I plan on going to connect via wireless to the system downstairs so I will have to buy the correct wireless card.

My question is this, how hard is setting up wireless on the new notebook that arrives shortly and the system downstairs? I have no wireless experience.

It's real easy. You gotta have a router to share broadband Internet though...I'd just buy a Wireless Router with a few ports on it. The notebook will work fine on it as well as the PC's connected to the hub. You'll need to connect the hub to the Wireless Router with a CAT 5 cable. The Wireless Router should have at least 4 wired ports on it so that shouldn't be a problem. The wireless experiences I've had have been good with Windows XP...I've heard it's a bit of a pain with Windows 9x and 2000 though.

So basically...the 3 systems upstairs on the hub will be connected to a Wireless Router via a CAT5 cable between the hub and the wireless router. The desktop and notebook downstairs will need a wireless card to connect to the wireless router upstairs. After getting it set up physically it shouldn't be too hard to get it working. If you have problems, I'm sure many of the people here can help. A few guys here know a TON about wireless networking (Mr. Mephisto comes to mind).

Chances are the notebook has a wireless card on it. Most new notebooks come with it standard, so you won't need to buy a card.

Like Lasereth said, you'll instead need to buy a wireless router. I would recommend just replacing your hub with the router.

I just bought that router for my brother and set up his home network. He has two desktops wired and one notebook wirelessly networked, and there are no problems. (The router can connect both wirelessly and wired) I haven't tried to set up printer sharing yet, but I don't think it would be too hard. The router works almost exactly like a hub, except it has a built in firewall, which is quite useful.

don't forget to turn security/encryption on when you get the wireless router - nothing worse than having your neighbour using your wireless connection :(
