help...please?
i'm using winXP w/ service pak1 installed, but i recently got sp2.
i keep getting this error: Source: DCOM Type:Error Event Id:10010 User:HPAV\user Computer: HPAV Description: The server {0002DF02-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. i've searched microsoft but no luck. i found other postings about it on other message boards, but nothing useful. my internet connection keeps going off by itself, and for some reason it keeps telling me that i can't renew my ip address. this has been going on for some time now. i've even reformated my computer, and still nothing works! please help

That's one of the problems with SP2, it changes all of your settings and automatically turns on the built-in XP firewall. I don't have XP on my personal computer and we haven't implemented SP2 on the computers where I work yet for this very reason, so I can't offer you a solution yet. But maybe knowing what the problem could be can help you find a solution.

I don't see how SP2 can be the problem if he's formatted his PC to fix it. Not unless SP2 changes BIOS settings on your mobo which is a stretch. Sounds like a grade-A hardware-switch test needs to be administered.

Didn't see the reformat part the first time i read it. The question is, did you put SP2 back on after you reformatted or was it the original XP still giving you problems? The fact that it's working on that god-aweful ME tells me that it's not a hardware problem.
My money is still on it being SP2/firewall related, unless the reformat was with vanilla XP, in which case I have no idea. |

when i had the original xp i didn't have any problems, and running millenium now, i don't have problems. the problems started when i got sp2, and it got really nasty when i kept geting that error saying my ip address can't be renewed.

did you tweak any of your services (i.e. - black viper's xp services tweaks)? or did you happen to catch "blaster" or one of it's variants???? those are my guesses... otherwise, like lasereth says, it could be a hardware problem.

It's gotta be the firewall then. Honestly I can't give you any advice on it since I haven't looked at a system with SP2 on it yet, other than do without SP2 until all the bugs have been worked out. It was a pretty large rewrite of the OS, and it was rushed so everyone that gets it is basically being unwilling beta testers. Unless you want to search for ways to fix it under the assumption it's the firewall problem that's about all I can give you.
