YA Bittorrent Q (Azareus)

first time using bittorrent...
in azareus, getting around 13/kb dl speeds on comcast cable, no firewall/router. ive got a yellow happy face showing in the health column, so i understand this to mean i have the wrong port setting, no? 15/kb upload max setting. test the port in the config wizard and its giving an error message. soooo, what port # should i use?? its currently at the default of 6881, so now I guess I have to go find the correct port #, but do you have to go through and test each port # until you find the correct one?

any help appreciated.

As you are actually downloading data the yellow face means that everything is ok but just that you are not uploading data to anyone else.

As for which port to use, it doesnt really matter that much as long as the port isnt blocked

Being on comcast myself, along with having neither a firewall nor router... I would assume that the torrent your connected to is;
A: Full of leachers who don't upload.
B: Doesnt have many seeds/peers connected.
C: Is on a slow tracker that's not connecting you to as many peers/seeds as possible.
D: All of the above!

I would suggest either putting up with the crappy speeds of that single torrent, or trying to find another one. I also may be completely off target on this, and it may be something connection related.

powerclown,
If the Azareus config wizard reports an error and you never see a green light, then you definitely have a NAT Problem. Do you use any firewall software (XP, ZoneAlarm, McAfee, etc.)? If so, you'll need to configure for port forwarding on 6881 (the only port used by Azreus).

What everybody said above me, plus a good writeup is available at: Slyck News - Solving Slow BitTorrent Download Speeds.

I would actually suggest using different ports to route bittorrent traffic through. Many trackers now will not allow you to even connect coming in over the default bittorrent ports (6881-6889). The reason is that a lot of ISP's are now throttling those ports and not allowing the full speed to go through them. I use ports 10500-10510 and my bittorrent transfer move through just fine.

If you have no firewall/router, why the hell not? You do realize that you get a valid IP address through Comcast that goes directly to your computer right? Get something please! And just make sure you portforward applications ports to the right destination IP.

Azureus does NOT use port 6881 - http://azureus.sourceforge.net/wiki/...tIsBlacklisted

Bingo...green light, floodgates open. 265/KB DL speed.
What worked for me after trying a bunch of different things was adding BitTorrent as a service in the Network Connections ('Configuring XP Firewall').

Thanks a lot guys, much appreciated!

[edit] back to reality. around 45-60k/dl variable but its better than before lol.

ooh, thanks powerclown. I'm on the college network, so I'll try that route and see how much bandwith I can squeeze out of my residential network.

How did you configure that Powerclown? I never really messed with Network Connections settings much.
