SP2 Sound Issues
I just installed Windows SP2, and my only problem so far is with the sound; it is several orders of magnitude quieter than before. I have to crank it up all the way to get normal volume, and at that point I am also getting background noise. I don't have a special sound card, and I don't think the drivers would be changed by installing the pack would they? How can I get my sound back?

Try this:
Click Start > Run > Type in "sndvol32" minus the quotes You'll see a volume control panel. Make sure the volume levels are acceptable. If not, bump them up. |
This should be moved to tilted computers...

Oops, yeah, I am an idiot. Please move to computers mods?

Those controls are set to the max, and the mute is not checked. |
I run Server2003 so I'm not sure if XP is the same but possibly SP2 turned off the Windows Audio Service, if XP has it in the Services. To check, go to the Run prompt and type services.msc, and hit enter. When the window comes up check for a service called Windows Audio. If it exists make sure it is Started and set to Automatic. If not I'd try another driver, even one for another version of windows such as 2000. I've gotten things working in 2k3 with 2000 drivers and not XP. Be careful tho this could break something so YMMV.

That service was already active and set on automatic. Can you give me more information on changing the driver I am using? |
just find out what soundcard you are using and go to their webpage to see if they have released an update for SP2. You should also check Device Manager from the Control Panel in System. After you click System click Hardware, then Device Manager. Go down to Sound, Vidgame controllers, etc and see if there is a colored ! that indicates a problem with the device.
