I just buy a new computer every 6 month to a year, but then I am software developer, so I have 5 machines at my desk. The old machines just migrate down.

I'd have to say about a 12-18 months on WinXP. I don't normally reformat unless there's a major problem. And normally by that time I can't back anything up, lol. I get way too lazy to backup things.

i format every 6-12 months. one of the hidden bonuses to formatting often is you are forced to ask yourself just how important all your programs are; you are forced to do some critical analysis and purge the old crap.

With Win95-98 I was reinstalling everey 6months give or take, with my current win2k machine in work it has been about a year and a half or more, but I will be doing it in the near future. With BSD OS' rarely unless it is on my laptop in which case when ever I want to try a new distro :)

anytime I think my computer is running slower than it should, format time. probably about once every 3 months (give or take 3 months)
