How to pay for an item on eBay?
I just wanna pay for the item and be done with it, but PayPal is making me actually sign up for an account.
I don't want an account through them. Isn't there just a screen where I can input my card # and just be done with it without going through this unnecessary hassle? I dont even know if I paid for the item or not. I clicked "pay now" and it asked for my CC# and all that, but then it immediately brought up my email and a "create a password" type screen. No receipt page, nothing. [edit] Actually went through that part twice. The first time it told me that there's already an account w/ my email address (there used to be years ago), but it's locked because I never cared enough to re-agree to their TOS and it was deactivated. So I re-entered all the info again, and same crap. So I put in a new email address & pw... and it still looks like it's making me sign up for it, which I do NOT want to do. It's telling me to do that stupid $1.95 charge and to wait weeks for my bank statement to verify the number, etc... this site pisses me off so bad. "Before you may use this funding source (your credit card ending in xxxx), you will need to enter your Expanded Use Number for this card. To obtain and enter this number, follow the instructions below." Uh... if I need to pay for something now, why would I have to wait till I get my f'n bank statement? Lo and behold, tricked into opening an account.

Looking through their help section and I see this:
Q. Do I need a PayPal Account to pay for an eBay item? A. Yes. [more blah blah blah] Right above that: Q. I paid through PayPal without opening an account. Can I sign up now? A. Yes. [blah blah blah] Mkay.. which is it? [edit] Also, sorry, don't mean to sound so "pissed", but I've been up for a loooooooooong time.. and I can't think straight, so it wouldn't surprise me if I totally just missed the spot where you just pay. (going to bed)

no, to my knowledge paypal requires signing up as part of their payment service to make a payment. My personal advice is to go ahead and sign up if you have any expectation of making purchases on Ebay in the future, cause sellers really appreciate the quick payments through paypal.
sorry dude...

So I seriously have to wait like 3 weeks in order to use my card?!
Hahaha, they have "Use paypal! It's fast, easy, and secure!" all over the site... waiting weeks to check a bank statement for a 4 digit number in order to even USE the thing doesn't seem very fast to me Are you positive there's no other way? It just seems silly that they'd make ALL these people wait this long just to pay for an item. A friend of mine (who I'll have to ask later if I see him) was telling me that there's a way you can pay directly via PayPal without having to open an account, just like you would in any other normal shopping cart app.

We use pay-pal many times a month--
Yes, we had to set up an account...BUT...we NEVER give them any kind of bank account numbers for verificaion....no one gets that.. Our visa card is handeled by one bank, and our checking/saving by another, so it is not needed... Set it up---I bet you will use it again soon..send an email to the seller and tell him you are having a little problem getting setup, or you will lose your purchase...you can also get a money order and send it. |

PayPal. I dont remeber the long set up time, but i started using it about 5 years ago. If the auction is for over 50$ i tend to use personal checks. That way if there is something wrong i can have my band stop payment. I've never had problems, but i just like to be safe.

PayPal has tightened up there account set up restrictions. It's not as easy as it was a few years ago. Now that they are owned by ebay, who knows.
Re: Your "expanded use number" perhaps this is the 3 digit number on the back of your CC? This is a new one for me if it is indeed 4 digits. The only other weirdo number I know about is the bank routing number that you can find on your checks. I only sell and buy on ebay through PayPal. I never had a problem but I know of others who have been frustrated just like you. The bank that isn't a bank (or FDIC insured) that basically has unlimited access to whatever account you give them to draw funds from. There are some real horror stories out there. My advice like that of a few others is use a money order.

Stompy: Does your bank offer any sort of an online banking feature? I use that religiously, combined with Microsoft Money I only open my bank statements only to immediately file them away. I can't remember the last time I actually looked at a paper statement...
