DSL and my phones
 

In an effort to be frugal, I switched from cable internet to DSL (cut my bill in half).

Now....I can't hear a damn thing through my phones!

I have had DSL before and had the same problem. Tech support had convinced me that the problem was my 900MHz cordless phone.

Anyway, I am back on DSL and using 2.4GHz phones, still can't hear shit. It is a little better on my corded phone, but I still hear a lot of fuzz/static on the line.

Has anyone hear had this problem and conquered it?

were/are you using the line filters? only time i've heard of phones getting messed up with DSL is if you're running a wireless network on the same spectrum as the phones....

Yes on the phone filters, that was the first thing I did.

The router that came with the DSL is Wired/Wireless but I am not using wireless at all (light is not lit up, etc).

the telco here installed dedicated lines in the house for DSL
make sure you have a filter in line b4 every phone..

If you call back in to the DSL ppl do not tell them about cordless phones only hard wired ones, just to get them over that excuse

What you should try doing is either turning off your DSL modem or unplugging it completely. If the noise is still there, then it's a line problem and you'll need to get your lines repaired. Now, get a standard corded phone, plug your DSL line onto a non-filtered line and plug in the corded phone into a filter, then plug the filter into the jack. If the line is silent, then that's basically all the phone company can do, unless you lease equipment from them.

Sorry, I work at a phone company and we deal with stuff similiar to this all the time. If you have any questions or anything, ask and I can ask one of our techs that does our DSL installs.

No noise/static/low volume problems four days ago (cordless or corded) when I was on cable internet.

Now, I can't hear anything. I can, however, hear better on the corded then the cordless.

But, that shouldn't matter. The phone company says the problem is with 900MHz phones, not 2.4GHz phones.

Filters are everywhere except where the DSL is plugged in.

i hear so many horror stories about people w/DSL.

I hope you can conquer this.

This is proof to me that it's worth the extra $15 bucks a month it costs me for cable internet!

Ok, when you test the corded phone, is the cordless unplugged?

No I leave everything plugged in.

Honestly, I want me DSL to work with all of my phones plugged in. That is one of the "features" of DSL, that you can be on the phone and on the internet at the same time.

KMA-628, what you're trying to do is divide and conquer. If you can rule on what is causing the problem, then you can easier resolve the issue.

I will try it out and get back to you.

It just isn't worth it.

I plugged my cable modem back in (hadn't canceled yet) and away I went.

Not only was I having phone problems, my connection dropped several times a day and varied in speed by plus or minus 650Kbps.

I'll pay more for the cable.

You know, this sounds like the problem I've been having with my DSL starting tonight.

I had 1 SSH window open, programming away, when my DSL connection just dropped. Everything looked okay in my network, ran a virus scan - ok, scanned for spyware - ok, etc. DSL modem lights looked ok, but I picked up the phone, and there was no dial tone. We've had this setup for years and it's worked flawlessly until today. Eventually my DSL started working again, although it would slow down/drop once in a while. Still no dial tone on the phone line though, even with only 1 corded phone plugged into any jack in the house.

I had to switch phone service to get the DSL. For the first few days, people had problems calling us. We would get a half-ring and then nothing. They would say that the phone was busy when they tried again (we weren't on the phone).

This morning. My "line in use" light is lit up but nobody is using the phone. Unplugged all of the phones and tested one, nothing.

We had no phone all day until a storm hit. About an hour after the storm, our phones worked again.

I think the tech that installed the new phone service screwed something up. We have a tech coming tomorrow morning.

We had a problem with our line for some time. When ever it rain the phone went out. DSL worked so I knew there wasn't a brake in the line. But time the phone guy got out it would be working again. Intermittent problems are a bitch. They replaced the line from the house to the box and that worked for awile. Then it happen again this time the guy found the problem. Water in a box on down the line some where.

If you lose your dialtone, you are supposed, at least at my phone company, to have a test line at the NID or 'box'. From what my techs tell us, you should be able to unplug all of your inside lines, wait a second and plug into the test line at the NID and hopefully you'll get a dialtone.
westothemax, just from the sound of it, sounds like some bad/faulty wiring somewhere. We call those a ring trip. Generally you can make phone calls, but when someone calls, the voltage goes down the line and shorts out somewhere causing the person to get one ring, then the line to go busy.
Also, in general, with DSL they do not need to do any inside wiring at your house. The equipment that they need to mess around with should be at their office or wherever you are being served out of, unless they are wiring a jack specially for the computer.
If a tech needs to do anything at your house, it should only be for testing your phone lines, or installing a new jack for the computer/modem whatever.
