I had a similiar problem with my Winamp. I later found out it was due some plugins I had. Did you inadvertly or advertly (?) download some plugins for your Winamp? You may want to check. Hope it helps.

how would i check for plugins on winamp?

Windows Media Player will play most avis for me. It could be a codec problem. The K-Lite Codec Pack contains every codec you'll ever need. www.k-lite.tk

Sounds like a codec problem if you get sound and no pic, that link right above this is to a pretty decent codec pack...

2 things -

1. GSpot will identify the audio/video codecs in most video files.

2. be wary of codec 'packs'. the kazaa one is prolly ok, but beware of the Nimo codec pack. i've seen too many people have probs after installing that.

btw, all you should *need* for avi's are -

DivX 5.05 Free version
XviD
AC3 filter

good luck :)

All the players are basically the same, it's the codecs that matter.

SiN, you sure know your stuff. Impressive!

Yeah, I've always had a problem with AVIs and Mac. i download DivX for the mac and that was pretty useless. I gave up trying to figure it out, but it looks like I have some new resources now.

Thanks crew

How about movie files encoded as "yEnc"....I can't figure out how to play those at all.

yenc is a newsgroup encyrptor/compression format. what you need is a newsgroup reader that will decode yenc(xnews, forte agent) highlight all the files you want, right click on em and click decode, give it a place and it will decrypt/uncompress them.

I use the Nemo codec pack.... Granted it does need a little "tweaking" once installed for the Xvid Stuff, but other than that, it has run perfectly fine for me. My assumption is that if Windows Media Player can't play any standard AVI files with mp3 audio and DivX video, then you have a problem with your codecs and you need to reinstall them.
