Someone enlighten me please...

I know this is obvious... but I'm having a stupid moment here.

What the heck is the Scroll Lock key for on a keyboard? It sure doesn't do what I think it's supposed to do...

Unless I'm doing it wrong

Well in my DOS days it used to stop many lines of text from "scrollong" so you could read them all.

I havent used it since windoze tho, so it prolly has some other function.

Open up Excel and select a sqaure. Then hit your scroll lock button. Now press your down arrow.

Not that it is useful, but if you are reading a huge database, you can scroll down with the arrow key without losing your original place.

Nowadays, we do the same thing with the wheel on our mouse.

Other than that, not really used any more in Windows. I hear Linux still uses it.

Some MUD'ing clients use it to split the screen. My KVM uses it to switch between CPU's. In my time of using Linux, I don't think I've used it while using Linux, only in an occassional program, much like in Windows.
