WMP Codec Problem
I BitTorrented some episodes of Ren and Stimpy and Good Eats, two of the best TV shows ever.
They're .avi files, and they play great on my Linux machine using mplayer. mplayer reports that it's using libmad's libavplay codec. I stuck 'em on a Samba share with the intention of playing them from my WinXP laptop, but Windows Media Player doesn't like the files. It goes to fetch up a codec, fails to do so, and then plays the audio from the show with a visualization as if it was an audio file. Any ideas about this? How do I find out what codec would play the files? Once that's accomplished, how do I make WMP successfully fetch those codecs? Or failing that, how do I get them and install them myself? |

there's a program called avicodec
get it here it will tell you exactly what codec you need and whether or not you have it. It will also usually give you a link to where to get that codec. It's helped me out many a time when I get something compressed with the most out of this world codec. Also, most codecs install themselves automatically. Just in case though, just put it in the wmp folder. edit: by the way, where did you find the torrents for the episodes of good eats? I love that show and it would be nice to have them for when I actually want to cook something from it.

yes, use Gspot - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/download.html
the k-lite codec pack will almost definitely have what you need if divx doesn't cover it. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...Codec_Pack.htm

Turns out the Divx codec did the trick. Thanks for all the other resources, though!
The Good Eats torrents were at http://www.suprnova.org a few weeks ago. I don't still have the seed around, and I have no idea if there'd still be any traffic on them these days. |
