Windows XP Networking
Specifically with netbeui....
Any input on this would be great... First off, I have upgraded both my computers to WinXP Pro. My network setup that I was using before on Win2k was this: Cable modem plugged into the uplink of a standard 10/100 hub. TCP/IP setup to obtain an IP thru DHCP from Roadrunner. Netbios over TCP/IP disabled. Netbeui installed on both computers for filesharing. Now that I have upgraded to WinXP w/SP1, this same setup does not work. Both computers are receiving their own IP through TCP/IP from the roadrunner servers. The windows firewall is disabled. I have temporarily shut down zonealarm to make sure there is no firewall in the way. Both computers are on the same workgroup. My second computer will see itself through 'My network places'. My main computer doesn't see either computer there. I try to access the other computer with the UNC with no luck. I have also tried IPX and this doesn't work either. Same issues. Before you say "Get a hardware router and not worry about Netbeui!", I really would rather do it the way I have been doing it. I get two different IPs from roadrunner and I can be downloading at 3.5m while my roommate downloads his porn/music/whateva at 3.5m... It really sucks when we have to share bandwidth and we're both downloading a shitload at once. I upgraded my computer to Windows XP first. I could still access his computer, and he could access mine with no problems. Now that he upgraded, it doesn't work either way. This is how I know that Netbeui still works with WinXP. Any ideas? |

Like it or not, you are still sharing the bandwith so the argument about the hrdware routher won't hold.
As far as the netbui goes, make the workgroup is the same on both machines, also make sure netbui is installed on both machines. (I'm sure you've done this, just covering all the bases) |

Actually, Bright House / Time Warner Cable gives out bandwidth by IP. The modem I have allows 5 different IPs to be connected to their network at once and I'm allowed 3.5mb down per IP. I have had 4 computers downloading at 300k+ steady for hours at the same time..
I have made sure that netbeui is on both computers... I'm thinking of either going back to Win2k on this computer or buy 2 routers (which I'd rather not do).. One more thing, I have made sure that file and printer sharing and client for ms networks are bound to netbeui. |
