Purchasing a ibook?

Hey, Im not really up with the times of apple. But would now be a good time to purchase a new 12" ibook?

Im not to sure of the last time they've updated there product line.

Im looking to get one with the G4 1Ghz, 30gb hd and 512ram. $1480 cdn after student rebate before taxes.

Or, should I look for one off ebay for around 1000-1300 Canadian? (G4 around 800-1Ghz)?

What do you guys think? This is going to replace my desktop computer (2000+ / 512ram / 330GB / ATI 9000 Pro 128mb) etc etc) Nothing crazy, but a decent computer. I will keep it for occasional use, but mainly use the apple. Im in love with OSX

What do you guys suggest I do? Is now a good time to buy a new ibook?

Crazy

If you are looking at it for a desktop replacement, I have been reading places where they say the 12 inch powerbook is probably better because of the faster bus speed. I am also currently in the market for an apple laptop and looking at getting either the 12 inch or 15 inch powerbook. I would think that it is a good time to buy because no forseeable update until Q1 of 2005.

what do you guys think about buying a used powerbook?

how well do the resale values hold, as compared to say a pc laptop?

I just bought a 15 inch powerbook for college and so far I am very pleased with it. It seems to me like the apple notebooks hold their value a lot better than pc notebooks but I am not completely sure of that. And as far as buying a used powerbook goes, i think the main problem i would have with that is the lack of a warranty, but if that is not a concern to you, id say to get one used.

The best site to keep an eye on this is the MacRumors Buyer's Guide. The current data says:
Quote:
Product: iBook
Last Release: April 19, 2004
Days Since Update: 85 (Average = 155)
Recommendation: Neutral - Mid product cycle
Special Notes: none.
Hope that helps.

iBook is great for a cheap notebook. Only real drawback is the max amount of memory you can put in the machines. Isn't much noticeable difference performance-wise between the iBook and AlBook in the 12" form factor.
