I need (routing?) help.
 

(warning: long story approaching)

I haven't been using soulseek much since I came home from school (33k dial-up) but it has been working.
1.5 wks. ago, we finally upgraded to hi-speed wireless (local provider)
for the first week, we didn't have a router. we just power cycled the radio, and plugged in whatever computer we needed to be using at the time. (soulseek was still working)
then, saturday, we got a router, configed it, and all of the computers were up and running.
and soulseek wouldn't work anymore.
It connected, and showed my friends list, but it wouldn't transfer files, or even search. according to the SlSk message board, this is usually caused by the listening ports on your router being closed.
I spent the next few days trying to set up the router to let the slsk ports thru, so I could feed my anime addiction, but no luck. yesterday, I finally got pissed off, cut the router back out of the circut, and connected directly to the radio again. BAM!! soulseek is working again.
the problem is, after about 4 hours of working, it has gone back to the behaviour it was exhibiting when I was plugged into the router, but I'm not anymore.

anyway, if you've actually read this, and have ANY advice to offer, I'm begging for help.

I don't know why it would be doing that without a router.

However, if you want to go back to using the router it is usually fairly easy to forward the ports. Quick google search brought up these ports: 2234-2239 that need to be forwarded. If you post your router's model number then I can try and help you get it set up.

As Zello said, port forwarding is the way to go. If you still need help, you can PM me as well with your router info. Also, if all else fails, most routers allow you to put one PC into a "DMZ" which makes it like there is no router at all. As a last resort, sometimes that can help.

alright. I'll look into that. it's a cheap router, so no real manual, I was playing with the settings in the router config.
is there something I need to do with my computer's settings to make it see the router properly? (I'm a Complete newb. at home networking, so I might be overlooking the painfully obvious)

Alright I did quick search and found this manual.

Now you either want 5.4.1 Special Application, or 5.4.2 Virtual Server. I'm pretty sure you want Virtual Server which is on page 20.

Under mapping ports column you would put 2234, put in your IP Address, and then check enabled.

If you don't know your IP address then you can click start, run, and type command, then type ipconfig and it will show you your IP.

*I'm not exactly sure the difference between those two, I just played around with em both untill I got emule to work.
