Drop Down/Pop Under Menus (need ideas)
 

Hey guys,

I'm a wannabe webdesigner who needs help on how to create some pop under menus for one of my professors.

I understand basic webdesign enough that I can toss something together in Photoshop and have it look good, but she would like menus similar to the one on this page http://www.csrees.usda.gov/ . They are the source of our funding.

My priorities are simplicity, as well as usable in IE and Mozilla. I've been researching how to do this in CSS, but it doesn't look promising, as compatability seems to be an issue. I don't really know that much about javascript, but will give it a shot if necessary.

Can someone point me in the right direction of a tutorial or guide on how to make this work?

Thanks! I've also been customizing some code from dynamicdrive.com , i'm going to do both and see which I prefer.

Two options that I can see... pick through your web professor's code:

Or you can pick through my code (a mix of Javascript and HTML layers. Then benefits to doing it my way is that each "button" for the drop downs can be assigned an images and is HTML controlable.

That should get you started.

If you have Macromedia Dreamweaver, it has an awesome set of "behaviors", which are extensions or plug-ins to the program, such as JavaScript snippets, etc. There is a very simple menu snippet built-in. I tried some of the free JavaScripts, which I never really understood. Dreamweaver, however was very simple to understand, and included an easy way to nest menus. If you are serious about web design, Dreamweaver is one of the best HTML tools around.

One of my new CSS books has a couple of cool ideas for CSS-powered menus. I'm going to work on that this coming week and I'll post up the results.
