need help with IP addresses.
forgive my lack of computer knowledge, but what exactly is your ip address and how important is it in computer privacy?
i ask this because while i was surfing the web i received one of those popups that show you your ip address, what operating system your using, and how much space on your computer...and it freaked me out. my shit is being broadcasted all over the internet! what type of information can people on the web get from your computer with your ip address?

Its the same as a house address, if people can find where you live -- they can do what they want -- depending how extensive your security system is.
Finding someones IP is no big deal, and a popup showing it is easy to make, and your browser probably sends the OS you use... I wouldn't worry about it honestly. Although if you honestly have alot to protect, and don't mind being annoyed and having some system resources used -- download ZoneAlarm

that is broadcast becuase your browser sends it. It's public infomation so to speak.
Yes, a "bad guy" needs your IP to attack you, but as long as you don't have any ports (ie a program or service running, a browser uses port 80 for insance) open there is nothing they can do to you. Just don't leave open shares, don't use a simple password. |

Go to grc.com and run the sheildsup test. You do not want it to be showing your username and whatnot... You IP address is seen by any computer you connect directly to. Your web browser sends you OS, usualy. check out http://www.cal.net/~ryan/htbin/http_headers.pl

pcflank.com is pretty good as well, if a bit reactionary.
I would always recommend a firewall if your on a permanent connx (ADSL, Cable, etc). Although I have played the "firewall rule" game and knocked my connx off soooooo many times
