Nvidia re-introduces SLI multi-GPU technology
Hey guys, I imagine some of you enthusiasts who started back in the 3dfx glory days will remember the initals SLI. A dual-card solution, aiming for the precise niche user who wanted only the best of the best of the best and was willing to shell out the dollars for it. Well, those days ended with the coming of the AGP cards, and haven't been seen since. Until now, with the dawning of the PCI-X generation of cards and solutions, we've heard nigh nothing of SLI, and now, Nvidia is announcing SLI-based solutions for the 6800, 6800 Ultra, and the 6800 GT. Expensive? Fuck yeah it is. Powerful? According to Nvidia, performance increase due to using SLI-based cards is currently between 1.87x and perhaps above 2.00x the "usual" performance you could achieve with a normal, single-card setup. wow, that's awesome. i didn't even know it was possible to allocate different sections of the screen to two different cards, and if the load balancing the article mentioned works well, you could do almost anything. wish i had the bread to get one...
