G-Mail

Anyone here have a G-Mail account? Could you please send me an invite? I couldn't get in on the beta testing.

Pragma 05-21-2004 08:16 PM

Aye, I'd love to get myself a G-Mail account but don't know how.

Jeff 05-21-2004 08:25 PM

They're very hard to get. If someone was smart they wouldn't just give it away. You can get something valuable for it. Pimp this shit....http://www.gmailswap.com/

Holo 05-22-2004 05:18 AM

If you just gotta have a free 1GB email now register at

www.spymac.com . They offer a lot more than that too.

ubertuber 05-22-2004 06:08 AM

I don't currently see a way to invite new people. They did that about a month ago. Who knows if they'll do it again? I also haven't heard when the beta is over.

Wyodiver33 05-22-2004 11:48 AM

I like spymac a lot. Remember, G-Mail is going to target ads to you. The adds will be inserted in your emails. Spymac doesn't screw around with your email.

pook 05-22-2004 01:43 PM

I have a Gmail account, but they've yet to allow me to invite anyone else to join.

You could always bid on one at eBay.

Jolt 05-22-2004 03:13 PM

why are you so anxious to sign up with a mail provider that searches your incoming messages and displays ads on your screen based on context of what it finds?

Tester123 05-22-2004 06:13 PM

Yahoo is countering and upping free mail accounts to 100 megs this summer and paid accounts will be gigantic,

Every online e-mail provider searches your incoming messages - though they do it to try to get rid of viruses. Furthermore, SMTP is an unencrypted protocol, meaning any messages you send get transferred across the internet in plaintext - so you really don't have that much privacy to start with.

Besides, I've got my own e-mail accounts for anything important/private - it'd be fun to have a 1GB free e-mail account, though.

tronims 05-23-2004 08:22 PM

I have my gmail account, best service I have ever used. Got it through blogger, wish I could invite more people to use it.
And about the ads, you only see them rarely depending on your message and I actually find it fun to see what the ads will pick up in my messages. Nothing I send is all that private anyways.

Knucklehead 05-24-2004 06:22 AM

I want to try out Gmail too. I have a Spymac account, but it is slow and unreliable . It's even having problems losing mail. Stay away from spymac for the moment...

b_angelo 05-26-2004 05:07 PM

call me ignorant, but what is Gmail and whats so special about it?

clockworkgreen 05-26-2004 05:20 PM

Ignorant.

Kidding.

Email service being offered by Google. They give you 1G of space, theory being, you'll never actually have to delete any of your email. They put out a beta to some people, and others are now worried they won't be able to get superfan99@gmail.com email addresses.

iamii 05-26-2004 09:11 PM

I started using gmail two days ago, got invited by a friend. Excellent service and has been everything I was expecting it to be. I also really don't mind the adds, don't even see them when reading a message.

jdjammer 05-26-2004 09:13 PM

so iamii, does that mean that you can invite "friends"? because, if you can, there are a lot of people here who want to be your friend. :)

ubertuber 05-27-2004 04:21 AM

You can only send invitations when they allow you to, which isn't very often (once so far as I know, and then only for the original "seed" users). The reason I like it is that the other free email services (Hotmail, etc) turn your messages into billboards. When I get emails from people with Hotmail accounts there is a little advertisement at the bottom trying to entice me to use Hotmail. Gmail keeps the advertising in my account area, and they are discrete little ads that are easy to identify like the ones on the Google results page after you search. No blinking, epilepsy-inducing, deceptive banners in my email! I'm with everyone else - email isn't a particularly private way to communicate in the first place, so having a computer scan my messages and suggest appropriate advertising is not a big deal. I just wonder what it'll be like if I start getting huge amounts of spam on the gmail account. Will my advertisements reflect the fact that hot lesbians want to meet me even though my dick needs enlarging and I am trying to buy college degrees from the internet with money from refinancing the house I don't own? That could be interesting.

pook 06-02-2004 04:19 PM

new service with 2GB storage

Let the games begin!

http://www.aventuremail.com is offering 2GB of storage.

ack32 06-04-2004 12:05 PM

If anyone has any leftover GMail invites, please send one my way! I'm interested in trying it out, as searching through my mail is very slow right now.

ToiletDuck 06-04-2004 12:19 PM

LOL!! ppl are bidding up to 60 bucks for a gmail account on ebay at the moment:hmm:

Its almost boerderline pathetic

jdjammer 06-04-2004 02:23 PM

Yup, I am one of those people who bought one on ebay for a lot of money.. But hey, I got the name I wanted.. :)

Iconoclast 06-04-2004 03:40 PM

I have one invite left. Not gonna let it go for free, though.

Wyodiver33 06-05-2004 03:39 PM

pook, that aventuremail is crap. I've been trying for 20 minutes just to set up an account. Fails every time, no matter what I do.

It fails due to the fact that they are only letting so many ppl sign up per month. I tried yesterday and they have already reached the 10k mark for the month, or so it said.

crewsor 06-05-2004 05:18 PM

I just set up an account at adventuremail. Worked for me, no prob.

thephuse 06-14-2004 08:15 PM

um.. am i missing something?.. what's the big deal with 1 gig of mail space? is everyone really so psyched about "saving all their old mail"?? eh..

j0hnb 06-15-2004 08:28 AM

I hope i'm able to get an account... I don't have much to offer, you now being a college student and all... But i'll figure it out some way. So if anyone is feeling nice PLEASE invite me... hehe, sorry about the beggin

Personally, the two biggies for me are storage space for files, articles, etc., and search capability.

j0hnb 06-15-2004 08:37 AM

Yahoo, finally enabled their 100mb email service... But Yahoo mail has been insanely slow today and i've been getting tons of error pages. It seems like they released it a little early, and left a few bugs in the system

Laugh! 06-15-2004 06:29 PM

Hey, if anyone has any spare invites, help a fellow TFP user out.

unwanted45957@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance... we might be able to work out a trade...

bacon_masta 06-15-2004 08:34 PM

wow, what a great idea. hadn't even heard of it, i'm definitely looking for a gmail account

I guess a number of websites, including Yahoo and Google, were under 'attack' for a bit on Tuesday. (More)

If you really need some storage, for $20/year Yahoo's 'Plus' mail service now gives you 2GB of storage and drops banner/box ads.

Wyodiver33 06-16-2004 04:53 PM

Well, aventuremail is now working, but they aren't taking any more free users. Oh well. Spymac works fine for me. 1 GB for free.

Holo 06-16-2004 08:21 PM

I got mine! I found a very generous stranger at another forum. If I get any invites I'll share the wealth to be sure.

clockworkgreen 06-16-2004 08:22 PM

Got one as well from a friend. Hopefully I'll get some invite opportunities myself.

jdjammer 06-16-2004 09:31 PM

Okay, I have one invite to give out.. So, first person I hear from, I will give it to.. :) (PM me)

(EDIT): Expired... SOrry guys.. As soon as I get another one, I will put up another invite for you tfp'ers... :)

Speed_Gibson 06-16-2004 10:08 PM

does anyone know of a free email service that offers POP?

pook 06-17-2004 02:33 AM

Do you mean access to your pop mail? Yahoo does that.

tropple 06-17-2004 03:31 AM

softhome.net :)

That's the only thing I don't like about the gmail service...

clockworkgreen 06-17-2004 08:31 PM

Aside from work email, which I don't have control over anyway, I'm going to try and adopt this web-only email thing. I don't get much personal top super duper secret emails that i need to download them, so I'm fine with keeping them online. Plus, with travel, I like the idea of being able to access my complete inbox from anywhere at any time.

Of course, I'm saying that now to try and talk myself into it.

jdjammer 06-17-2004 08:42 PM

OKay, I got more invites.. So the first 5 people to PM me can get an invite again.. :)

jdjammer 06-17-2004 10:08 PM

wow.. 6 hours, and not one PM... I guess everyone has gmail now.. :)

pook 06-18-2004 01:20 AM

All gone! No more PMs, please.

yeah, but you have to pay for it....

pook 06-18-2004 03:33 AM

check again. i just logged in to one of my basic yahoo mail accounts and under options you can check pop mail. and, since we're on the subject, the $20 annual upgrade to yahoo mail is worth it. no ads, 2GB of storage and you can customize your pop mail features (choose the 'from' address, stuff like that).

nash 06-18-2004 01:20 PM

Gmail has by far, the best interface I've ever used. One feature I like a lot is "conversations," where a sequence of back and forth emails are displayed like a thread on a forum. Another thing is keyboard shortcuts, I don't think you have to use your mouse at all if you don't want to. And regarding privacy, it's not any worse than any other email service (you can read the TOS for yourself).

By the way, POP3 support is in the works, according to Gmail. Anyhow, Gmail is still in beta, so there's really no point in criticizing it. I believe praise for it is okay because it is very unlikely that they will take away features.

pook 06-18-2004 03:36 PM

Conversations is nice. And if Gmail's spam filter will also filter your incoming POP mail, I'll switch to it permanently. Yahoo's spam filter ONLY filters mail coming in at your Yahoo account.

TheBrit 06-20-2004 08:01 AM

Does anybody want a gmail account?

If you do, post or PM me your name, surname and current e-mail address. First 6 to get in get gmail accounts, and possibly a few more tomorrow.

Bear in mind the whole e-mail scanning thing and weight it up for yourself. Also make sure that you meet the minimum specs on www.gmail.com/

GakFace 06-20-2004 08:11 AM

OOh, I"m up for one! (I'll PM ya)

wow... amazing I check within 10 minutes of the post.. haha

Ace_O_Spades 06-20-2004 08:44 AM

pm sent... hopefully I'm in

TheBrit 06-20-2004 08:53 AM

While I'm writing, I have one left. That was quick!
For those wondering, this is how it works. You register, and then based on some voodoo magic gmail decides whether or not you get invites to give out. Now, a lot of people get none. A few people get 3. I must have had about 20 to give out by now.

TheBrit 06-20-2004 09:01 AM

skier was the last in.
I'll revive the thread if I get any more.

skier 06-20-2004 09:11 AM

ForgottenKnight 06-20-2004 09:13 AM

Been looking for one of those for quite a while now.. Thank you so much!

Damn, I missed out :(.

Helluva nice thing of you to do, TheBrit.

strcrssd 06-20-2004 02:59 PM

I apparently also missed out. If you have any more Brit, I'd love to get one.

Peetster 06-20-2004 04:07 PM

ironchef82 06-20-2004 04:45 PM

Bah... I paid $2.49 on ebay for mine yesterday.

Still. worth every penny... sure as hell beats hotmail.

speaking of which, Ebay has thousands of them available for those who want in.

Supple Cow 06-20-2004 06:10 PM

The Gmail Giveaway Thread

I was one of the first group of Gmail users because I use Blogger, and I must say that I love the service. That being said, I want to spread joy and happiness throughout the computer world by giving Gmail access away to everyone I can. I've noticed that Gmail is giving me 6 new invitations each day around 8pm so this may be a slightly slow process, but eventually (if they continue to replenish my supply daily at 8) all of the have-nots can be haves. I'm also spreading joy at my school forum, so it will be more like 6 TFPeople every other day. I ask nothing in return.

The Rules:

1. Post a reply asking for an account in this thread.
Make sure you ask for one explicitly so that I can tell the difference between comments and requests.

2. Then send me a PM containing the email address to which I should send the invitation. You should do this second because I will be going by the order of posts in this thread and not the PMs. NB: Hotmail accounts are not receiving any Gmail invitations, and Yahoo! is filtering them to the Spam folder.

3. En[G]oy the Gmail!

EDIT: Just so that invitations don't get wasted, please send a PM to only one person: either me or one of the other folks who has offered their invitations in this thread.

If you have already asked for one and then somebody else invites you before I do, please send me another PM to cancel your request. Thanks!

k1ng 06-20-2004 06:17 PM

I would like an account, please =)

Holo 06-20-2004 06:49 PM

Kudos to you for not playing games with ppl to get invites like essays and whatnot. It's ridiculous what ppl are expected to do for one of these, like write essays on worthiness or crap like that. I got one already but I haven't been given any invites yet.

Krycheck 06-20-2004 07:01 PM

I'd like a Gmail account please. With cherries on top :D

phukraut 06-20-2004 07:09 PM

I would like one if ya got one :)

ZodGilla 06-20-2004 07:35 PM

I'm all for giving away gmail for free... but I had to work for mine at www.gmailswap.com ... and it was a hell of a lot of fun. I recorded the answering message for some woman's cell phone voice mail in exchange for an account. She had a good laugh, I had a good laugh, and I got some gmail out of the deal

bryan2766 06-20-2004 07:40 PM

I would like an account too please, thanks .
