Amplifiers or receivers?

Good day,

I did a brief search on this topic and didn't come up with anything so here goes:

In the near future, I plan to buy a TV, multi-disc DVD player, and tabletop speakers (with subwoofer) to go with this nice little set (it's as much for music as for movies).

Problem: I can't plug speakers directly into a DVD player like this. I believe I need a receiver or an amplifier.... (I lean toward receiver).

Other Problem: I don't know what kind of device would be good.... any suggestions on brand name and/or model number would be agreeable with me (preferably under $150)

Thanks in advance for any help

Do you plan to do multichannel so you'll be able to decode the 5.1 channel track on the DVD, or are you just going to do 2 channel stereo? As much as I hate to say it, you'd probably be best served by a home theater in a box system. No receiver for $150 is going to be worth a shit. That way, you'll have your DVD player, receiver, and 5.1 speaker system all taken care of. The only model I know of that has a 5 disc DVD changer is made by Yamaha, and it sells for $599. I'm sure there are others out there, but I just don't know of them. Yamaha's HTIB's are pretty much the mac daddy's of the biz though. You can get a basic (single DVD) system for around $299.

If you are not looking for 5.1 and are just going to have 2 channels, just buy a set of wireless speakers which should hook right into the RCA jacks.

here is a set & if you do a yahoo search for "wireless speakers" Im sure you can find cheaper ones.

HT in a box??? Oh no.....

Listen, you buy shit you get shit. If you can't afford a good setup now, only save and buy a quality piece at a time. That is rule number 1. Might take ya a bit longer, but in the end you will enjoy the results much more if you skimped along the way.

Good advice iamtheone, I'll seriously take that to heart.

I'm really hoping I can get the setup I want by the time school starts again (I got a brand new town home), but I'm willing to wait to get quality items.

First things first: the TV

Only then will I get the DVD player (and it will be multidisc) It'll just take longer.

Thanks mates.

blah blah blah. We live in society needing instant gratification. HTIB would be the quickest, easiest, and cheapest solution. I know, I know, I hate them too. If you are willing to wait, then get a Parasound C1 controller, a Paraosund A51 amp, Denon DVD 5900 DVD player, and a full set of Transparent cables. And buy it all from me.

It is all in taste and preference. I just have learned good things come to those who wait : )

hey, do a 6mnth same as cash or something? You can pick up a pretty decent speaker system for $4,000 - $6,000 bucks no problems.

I'm not nearly the audiophile these guys are, but I've had a system for several years now. I put maybe.... $1k into it (...okay.. maybe 1500) and I've been more than pleased. It's all midrange stuff, but it isn't prepackaged. I do have to agree that the best way to go for longterm system use is to get a good receiver and separate dvd player. The receiver is the cornerstone to your setup. I've got an old Pioneer that has been great (yah yah.. you guys probably slam Pioneer). If I were to get one now without spending 10k or anything, I'd go with a nice mid range Denon. They make great products.

Of course, you can always buy a pre-packaged set in a box for 300 bucks, but you'll not be nearly as satisfied with it over the long haul probably.

I bought mine in pieces and felt great about doing so.
First, I bought a receiever and two front speakers (nothing fancy even.. two good 100watt bookshelf speakers by Yamaha).

Second, dvd player

Third, really good JBL center channel (buy a good center, nuff said)

Last, Rears and Sub (sub makes the difference baby)

I don't think I spent more than $250 on any given speaker, and my receiever was around $500 (at the time - this was 5 years ago, mind you - it doesn't even have DTS. GAH!)

All in all, the system still cranks and I didn't blow 10 Gs on it. My friends and family are still blown away and nobody I currently know has a system that sounds as nice. Now, I need new cables desperately, because mine are crap, but hey... that's how it goes. I also lost my theater room because I had another kid and now I hardly ever get to watch movies with good sound =/...again, that's how it goes.
