This is fucking stupid

OK, here's the stats on my computer
HP Pavillioin a330n:
Athlon 3000+
512MB PC2700
Geforce4 MX 64MB
Fully updated WinXP Home as of June 10
Symantec AV Corporate Edition (don't hit me, it's free from school)
Latest AdAware and SpyBot

OK, here's the list of problems

One: Nothing will connect through any protocol other than http. The sole exception is in Opera, which I can use to get to my school's ftp if I use the automatic proxy configuration script.

When I try to connect to ftp's, TFP chat, or any other IRC network, I get a conneciton refused error. The Java chat interface gives me, "java.net.ConnectException: Conection timed out: connect" LiveUpdate also won't connect.

Two: I'm sure this is somehow related, as it started at the same time. In Opera (I gave up on IE ever working quite a while ago,) even though I have cookies fully enabled, including third party cookies, Sites like Best Buy refuse to accept this fact. While I'm on the subject of browser problems, GIFs won't animate, and TFP will no longer display profile buttons on my computer (I logged on from a friend's computer, and it was fine.)

Reformatting is not an option right now, as I have too much that I can't back up due to lack of space. The worst part is that I got it back from HP repair a month or two ago (warranty) and it's already acting up.

Cable through Optimum Online.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Opera is no longer able to determine file size or estimated time for downloads anymore.

Can you borrow a hard drive from someone and copy all your files to it at once? If so, you would have everything saved, and then be able to reformat with a lot less hassle.

Me and my girlfriend were having problems with her grandparent's PC with Symantec. Usually it does a great job (better than any of the anti-virus programs I've tried), but this time was a bit different. Anytime the realtime protection was enabled, the PC wouldn't connect to AOL. It was giving us major problems. We disabled Symantec and the Internet troubles fixed immediately.

I'm not sure if it's a new Symantec update that's causing it, but it's worth a try! I'd close out Symantec completely and see if that helps.

HP Sucks! hehe, sorry.

for the hell of it, have you tried yet another browser? mozilla, netscape etc.

do you have an ftp program like ws_ftp, or are you using browser only?

Are you actually on a network provided by the school? If you are then they're blocking ports/systems. The blocking is easy enough to do and they can disallow any connections they decide to, which explains why you can connect to the School's ftp and to no other ftp sites.

If that isn't the case, then it sounds to me as though the XP firewall is turned on. You'll need to call OptOnline support to see why your system can't make connections on certain ports/protocols.

When I get those types of errors, it is usually a problem with the firewall client not being able to find the proxy server, or a port is being blocked.

That's what I'm afraid of.

Hey, I wouldn't be caught dead with AIM! It wasn't my PC. My girlfriend and I are actually trying to get her grandparents to switch to DSL. AOL is worse than I ever imagined (I've never used it).
