How old is your oldest everyday computer?

How old is the oldest PC you still use every day, or at least a number of times a week? My notebook is less than a year old, but my desktop is pushing six years. I keep upgrading RAM, video and the HD.

hrdwareguy 06-08-2004 10:55 AM

Probably about the same, I've got a print server in the back that's a PII 200.

redarrow 06-08-2004 10:57 AM

Ive a PIII 500 which I go online with when Im playing a game or something where my main machine is in use.

Kadath 06-08-2004 11:02 AM

I bought this box...3 years back. I have another box that I gave to a friend that is now 7 years old. He uses that every day.

SiN 06-08-2004 11:08 AM

our server is a p3 400. on nearly 24/7. runs Debian. :)

(nfi exactly how old tho)

soopafreek 06-08-2004 11:41 AM

my main computer is a p3 900MHz running 24/7 (folding@home). XP pro

i've also got a server that's got a pentium pro 200 running 24/7. don't know how old.

Fallon 06-08-2004 12:04 PM

Pfft!
I'm running as my main computer a AMD 400 mhz with lots of old hardware. This one is generally running all the time.
I've also got like 10(at least) 100-166 and maybe even a 200 mhz in my room that I can install any OS on at a moments notice. I don't have these running for the most part, but I occassionally toss on an OS to test something, like I did have one of them set up with Smoothwall linux as my dial-up server and such.

oblar 06-08-2004 12:16 PM

woot, looks like so far I win! :)

I have two fairly old computers that I use on a daily basis.

One is a server box that is 5 years old now that is a p3 600mhz.

the other is acting soley as a router. Pentium 100mhz. Its got some strange amount of ram (as much as I could find).

this is just one that I use everyday. As far as oldest, I would probably be beaten, because oldest is only a 486dx66 since I no longer have my 286 :(

bltzkriegmcanon 06-08-2004 12:39 PM

My current computer is about 1 year and 3 months old.

sailor 06-08-2004 12:51 PM

I have a firewall box that is a p2 400.

primal 06-08-2004 12:58 PM

I've a got celeron 400 with 256mb ram and a voodoo 3. I use it mostly as a test platform. Right now it's running windows 2003 server, and it's a little slow for that duty. I've been considering putting longhorn on it.

bacon_masta 06-08-2004 01:08 PM

my laptop is from 99 (pIII 300mhz w/ 64 megs ram), one desktop from 2001 (1.0ghz and 256 megs ram) and a desktop (1.8ghz p3, 512 megs ram)

theburner 06-08-2004 01:12 PM

Print Server... P3 500, 386 RAM, 6GB HDD.. From 2000. (maybe 01), can't remember.

punx1325 06-08-2004 02:20 PM

Pentium 1 120, I got that computer in 1995 and I occasionally use it. It does Word, Internet, AIM, and a few other tasks. I have been meaning to put Windows 98 on it, but I am afraid it will be too slow...

Cocktopus 06-08-2004 02:36 PM

print/fileserver with a celeron 300a running at a blistering 464Mhz

Latch 06-08-2004 02:53 PM

I have a pIII 600 here I use as my windows machine (when I want to listen to the baseball game and mlb.com uses streaming proprietary realplayer).

Back at home, there's a proxy/gateway machine that's a p2 350, or something along those lines.

ssh_agent 06-08-2004 03:02 PM

my ipcop is a p166, runs nicely still.

Holo 06-08-2004 03:20 PM

My Emachines 366i2 is still running 24/7 after more than 4.5 years in service.

oberon 06-08-2004 04:51 PM

Console server: P166, originally purchased in 1996. I only use it once every few days, to debug hosed machines. HD and PSU were replaced last summer.

My fileserver (formerly a workstation) was 5 years old when it died recently (was a dual P3-600, originally a P2-450). Replaced it with a VIA C3 1.2GHz. It runs nice, quiet, and cool now. :)

feer the BigMac!

Apple Macintosh Quadra 950.
Date of Manufacture: October 1991
66MHz MC68040 processor w/ internal FPU
256mb memory (16 16mb 30-pin SIMMs)
512kb L2 cache (on AWS 95 booster card in PDS slot)
on-board video w/ upgraded VRAM
total 5 SCSI busses (2 on mobo, 2 on booster card, 1 ATTO fast/wide card
Farallon 10/100 fast ethernet card
Radius VideoVision framegrabber w/ A/V patch panel
several hard disks of various size
6-disc CD changer, single CD-ROM, CD-R, and DDS tape drives.
Apple Color OneScanner 1200/30
Mac OS versions 7.1, 7.5.3, 7.6, and 8.0 depending on which disk I boot from, as well as MachTen on top of 7.1
19" (on KVM) and 14" displays
two keyboards, three mice, a touchpad, and a joystick

spare motherboard and power supply in storage

The total value of this hardware when it was new would rival that of the house I live in. Today most of it is literally worthless. I accept that but I refuse to part with some of my legacy software.

(just for the record, the other machines on my KVM presently are a 3-year-old Athlon 1000 and a 2.4GHz Xeon, new this spring)

Pragma 06-08-2004 06:21 PM

I've got a 6 or 7 year old Pentium 200 laptop that I've tossed a Cisco wireless card into that I use for wardriving sometimes - but for the most part, my oldest is a 4 year old Duron system.

nash 06-08-2004 08:01 PM

I've got a P2 450, and P2 500 running right now. Five and four years old respectively. There's also a P4 2.2 and a Centrino here, but they're not really old. I don't think the P2's have been upgraded (except for RAM) since we bought them.

But the oldest monitor I have was bought in 1995. Best monitor I have ever owned. It's 17", and a tad large, but it's got knobs for contrast and brightness. One flick of the wrist and you can turn both down to zero and have the screen completely black. No "hold down that button" nonsense to change contrast and brightness. Samsung Syncmaster 17Gli.

ibis 06-08-2004 09:11 PM

I got ya all beat.

We've got a 33mhz (030) Apple Preforma.

I bet my cell phone has a faster clock speed ;)

Speed_Gibson 06-08-2004 09:44 PM

my oldest daily use (as in 24x7, 365 days) is the Gateway PIII 650 that acts as my server. the other three on my main desk have a mean system speed of 1.3 ghz
I did add my dad's old Pentium 200 to my clan and that will likely see daily use as either a *nix box or keep on working as a win98 system. This system has a 1997 Tyan AT mainboard that is maxed out at 200 mhz and 64 MB of ram. also has a Diamond (? I forget now) 4 MB video card and other things fromt that era.

Smackre 06-09-2004 12:35 PM

i use it everday im at work

Kllr Wolf 06-09-2004 02:07 PM

I find it hard to tell th exact age of the computers i use frequently. Every few months it seems i am replacing some part or another. Of course for the oldest that I have and still use ocassionally when I want to play some games from when I was a kid I an 8088 machine with a whopping 20 megs totatly between the two harddrives. Sometime in the future I will also be setting up my TI-99 4/A and commadore 64. but htey wont be used on a weekly bassis so i guess they dont count.

phredgreen 06-09-2004 04:09 PM

my everyday usage computer, the only one i have and the one i am currently typing on right now, is a p2 running at 533mhz. it's got about 196 megs of ram and a 6 gig hard drive. i run win2k, and it runs pretty well, despite its age. it's a good basic computer with a bit of functionality, but it's not even comparable to most machines out there these days. this is my one and only machine.

MontanaXVI 06-09-2004 04:41 PM

my desktop is a homebuild i have had for a couple years now, dual p3 1ghz, 768 ram, 60 gig hdd winxp pro.

serves every purpose i need just fine, i also have a 2nd box sitting here that I do not even use but need to, it is a dell poweredge server with a 933 256 ram a tape dat and dual 10gig scsi drives.

Dragonlich 06-10-2004 12:05 AM

My desktop is some 9 months old, which I update regularly with new goodies.

My server is an olde P166 running debian (it used to be a Pentium 60). Technically, the shell of that computer is olde - it's an IBM machine I got from my former employer. FYI, that P60 was one of the first Intel made, with the accompanying calculation bug.

I also own a HP laptop with a pentium 133, which came with a one-speed external scsi cd-rom drive (build in '97).

Untill a month ago, my home pc was a PII 400 that I upgraded as much as I could. I built a new one. My work pc is a PIII 933 that's 3 1/2 yrs old. It's becoming a POS rather quickly.

MPower 06-10-2004 01:38 PM

386 w/16megs of memory and 56k modem. Probably 14yrs old. Use it weekly for govt billing.

oh yea, it has a 700meg hard drive.

viper11885 06-10-2004 03:21 PM

Have a 1ghz intel with 384mb ram, 64mb ati card, etc... that is used everyday. It is the main computer.

My dad uses a 133mhz intel quite frequently as his work programs doesn't have a lot of requirements to run.

merlin 06-10-2004 04:29 PM

oldest that's still in use around here is a p2 350 that my dad uses for taxes and internet

P3s didn't come in 400mhz. It's either a P3 or it's 400mhz. If it's 400mhz it's a P2, if it's a P3 it's >533mhz.
