Help my comp just died

Hey, as the title suggested, my computer died. and i was wondering if any of you could give me a suggestion as to how i could fix it

ok basically my new p4 no longer boots.

yesterday everything was normal as i shut it down for the night, but this morning i turn the power on and i hear the fans go on and the leds light up. but no beep and no signal is sent to the screen.

i opened it up and confirmed the video card and CPU fan turned on, so that means the power is flowing. but nothing happens. i have dual bios so the chance of both being screwed is a little too low.

the main thing is it was totally normal until i tried to turn it on this morning. how could something break overnight with everything turned off.

i kinda need the thing on as fast as possible too, as i have in my email a phone number i have to call pretty urgently.

thanks for any help you guys can give

Well, if you're really in a hurry, i suggest taking the hard drive that has your vital info on it and adding it as a slave drive in a working computer. As for your problem, you should hear beeps if it was your processor because those sounds come from your motherboard to your internal speaker (that's if you connected that correctly...)

When you get some time, try taking everything out besides the power supply, motherboard, memory, and processor and see if it boots up to your bios. If so, start adding things one by one. If not, I suggest getting a new motherboard.

What kind of p4 is it, and are you using the stock heatsink?

Some of the more recent p4's have had issues with just up and dying dues to thermal breakdown. A buddies 3.0Ghz just did this a few weeks ago and he replaced the mobo before figuring out what was wrong.

well the heatsink is a thermaltake something or rather with arctic ceramique, i dont think the heat was a issue as it was around 39C when i shut it down last night.

its a 2.8 Northwood.

visual inspection of the mobo shows no signs of damage, but i dont want to remove the cpu heatsink if i dont have to.

but is it true that the mobo will still beep with a dead CPU, cause i would hate to replace the mobo but i wouldnt mind getting a new cpu.

I had a similar problem. I had a hard drive plugged into the mobo but not to the power supply. I thought the motherboard was broken, but i did what spived2 said. So make sure all the cdrom and hard drives are plugged in.
